I took my brave step forward into the light, trying my best not to make a sound but she sensed me anyway and turned to face me with her brilliant smile that I loved almost as much as her. She still looked as young as the first day we met, still breathtakingly beautiful.

“Lurking in the shadows again, are we?” she teased

That was one time, and I was trying to surprise her.

I blushed and looked down as I approached her, she noticed my bashfulness instantly and reached for my cheek as I came to a slow stop in front of her.

The speech in my head that I prepared seemed to have disappeared, vanished without a trace, my amnesia resulting from the strikingly gorgeous blonde shining down on me. Hell, after 5 years and some change I was still intimidated by her, vulnerable and out of my element when she looked at me with her deep penetrating gaze.

“Hey, what’s up?” she asked, reading my face for any obvious clues for my sudden shyness

“Nothing I, Spence listen”

Panic broke out on her delicate features as she waiting patiently while I struggled to find the right words.

“I’ve been thinking a lot” I start

An amused smile graces her lips, and her eye brow raises playfully

“I know, I’ve been thinking, shocker right?” I’m returned with a laugh, all the courage I need to continue, “You mean the world to me and I just wanted to say, well ask you if..”

“Oh my god, there you guys are!”

Spencer’s gaze travels beyond my shoulder and I don’t even have to turn around to know who it is.

“Kyla? Oh my god! What are you doing here?” she asks confused, with a hint of excitement, like she can’t believe it

Honestly? I can. Interruptions love us

I turn around now as Spencer rushes past me to greet her old friend, I try desperately to wipe off my frustrated look at her unwelcomed timing but I know it’s not her fault, she had no idea what was about to take place.

My blonde releases her from a warm embrace and her eyes travel to me as I approach the two girls 

She looks back an forth between my exasperated face and Spencer’s questioning eyes, “I’m so sorry, did I interrupt something?” Spencer and I share a look, she’s wondering the same thing

“No of course not, come here!” I pull her into a big hug letting the uncomfortable atmosphere vanish

“What’s up, what are you doing in Florida?” Spencer asks, I also would like to know the answer to that question

“Well…” she hesitates, making us uncontrollably lean closer to her as we await her answer

I wrap my arm around Spencer’s shoulders, pulling her slightly closer to me

“you see…Aiden and I, well we broke up”

Silence.

Deafening silence.

My arm drops from Spencer’s shoulders.

“You, um, you what?” Spencer asks, rubbing her throat with her hand to soothe it

“Yeah what?” I ask

Her eyes dance like ping pong balls as she looks back and forth between our stares

“Well technically, he broke up with me” she continues, “So now I’m here on the rebound!” she claps her hands and laughs nervously “Let’s go bar hopping!”

Yes, let’s…I could use a drink right about now and by the looks up it, so could my soon to be fiancée.

And something tells me that this vacation isn’t going to go as smooth as I originally anticipated.
