    Memories – (Chapter: Desperate Measures)

Alright, it probably wasn’t the smartest idea, now that I think about it.  I lay here on the ground making an effort to focus my eyes.  I feel like I was just kicked in the stomach as I try to catch my breath.  I am sure I have a concussion and I am most likely bleeding from several places.  But, look at the brightside; I got her to stop!

“SPENCER, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!!”  She is screaming at me as she jumps out of the cabin and runs around the open door.  She kneels next to me, not sure if she should touch me.  “Are you trying to get yourself killed?”  I look at her for a moment and she looks on in genuine concern.  Her eyes are warm again.  I smile slightly through the pain.

“I am throwing myself under a bus for you, because I want you to stay.”

“Oh my god, Spencer you’re bleeding.”

“I don’t feel very good.”  Everything went black.

    ~

“Happy Birthday!”  She jumped in shock.  I had decided to throw her a surprise party for her twenty-second birthday.

“Oh my god!  I thought you forgot.”

“Well duh, it would not have been much fun otherwise.”

We had gone out to dinner.  It was hysterical.  This afternoon I told her I wanted to go out and celebrate a very important day.  Thinking I was obviously going to say her birthday, she playfully asked ‘what would that be?’ and I told her I was getting some measly promotion at work.  She was Ashley at her best.  Without missing a beat she congratulated me and told me she was happy for me.  I know she was distraught that I had not mentioned her birthday, but she didn’t let it show.  She was all smiles, because it was ‘my special night’.  She was not expecting the welcome she received when she opened the door to our apartment to find it jammed pack with people.  Everyone came.  I planned so far in advance that even both our families and Aiden were able to come.

“I can’t believe you did all this for me.”

“I can’t believe you thought I would have forgotten the most important day of the year.”  I lean in and kiss her, “Happy Birthday.”  She scanned the room and spotted Aiden.

“Aiden?  Oh my god!”  She wrapped him up in a big hug and they talked for a while.  We made our way around the party, careful not to leave anyone out.  Everyone had a blast.  I even rented a karaoke machine and with a couple beers in me, let me tell you, even Glenn didn’t sound all that bad.

The night wound down and most of the guests had left, leaving just her mom, my dad, Clay, Glenn, Aiden, and Lucy.  Ashley and I sat on the couch holding each other as we all talked.

“Spencer!”  I turned to look at Ashley, because she had called me.  “What?”  She asked; confused as to why I was looking at her.

                “You just said my name.”

“No I didn’t.”  I turn back to the conversation, confused by her game.  “Spencer!”  I look at her again, this time angry.

“What?!”  I practically yell it at her.

“I didn’t say anything!!”  She puts up her hands and I read true surprise on her face.  “Are you okay?”

                “Why are you doing that?”

“Spencer!”  This time I watch her say it.

“See!! You are saying my name!”

“Spencer!  Wake up!”  I tilt my head trying to examine her face, to figure out what is happening.  “WAKE UP!!”
