Take My Air
Instantly Ashley had darted to Spencer’s side, her eyes searching as she stared down at her. She didn’t know what to do or how to react, and this incredible panic had set in, “Spencer! Spencer!” She shouted, as if she could wake her, “Spencer, I don’t want a break. Spence, come on, wake up. I don’t need any air, no air, you can have all of my air- just wake up!”
The girl’s jumbled words didn’t make all that much sense, and soon a few of her classmates were having to pull her away from Spencer to allow the paramedics access. She watched them load her into the ambulance, her heart thundering in her ears. The next few hours passed in a daze. Apparently she’d somehow gotten herself safely into the hospital and was now sitting in the waiting area, staring blankly ahead. It was as if she’d completely shut off, and her brown eyes were dull as they rested unmoving on the beige tinted wall in front of her.
Even Ashley was puzzled about why she wasn’t crying or frantic or something else equally appropriate. She almost felt guilty for not pacing the aisles, certainly Spencer deserved someone who would pace the aisles. It was only about thirty minutes later when it finally dawned on her why she couldn’t feel anything. It was because she was about to lose everything.
“You can come see her now, but she is asleep.” The voice jerked Ashley from her daze, and she nodded as if she’d actually comprehended what the nurse had said. All she understood was that this woman was the person who was going to get her to Spencer, therefore she was vital.
The brunette followed the woman down the hall, her eyes staring at the nurse’s white tennis shoes and allowing them to guide the way. After what seemed like an eternity of walking she was allowed into Spencer’s room. There she was, laying in the hospital bed with her eyes shut and a absurdly peaceful expression on her face.
“Hey there Spence.” Whispered Ashley, approaching her bedside softly. She looked the girl over, searching for something but she wasn’t sure what. Not finding whatever it was she was looking for she huffed a sigh, a frown tightening her lips.
