    You weren’t promising anything or trying to fix me.

    When I looked up her eyes were staring back at mine, they held so much love.  It kind of startled me that she was awake, she hadn’t moved and her breathing was still slow and even.

    “Sorry I woke you.” I whispered slowly moving my hand from her shoulder to cup her cheek.

    “It’s ok…thank you.” she replied.

    I gave her a questioning look.

    “For being so caring and gentle.” Ashley finished taking my hand with her own and moving it back to her scar.

    I nodded.  I have never wanted to be so gentle with someone in my whole life.  I thought about the Natalie Merchant song I heard her playing at her grandma’s and how much sadness had been in her voice.  The lyrics seemed to explain so much as I looked back at her scar. 

    “Ash, is this the reason you are sad?” I asked tracing the scar’s outline. “When you were playing My Skin at your grandma’s you had so much sadness in your voice.  You said it wasn’t me, but….”

    She put her finger over my lips stopping me.

    “You most definitely are not the cause of any pain for me.” she said softly.  “When I was playing that song, I was letting out all that I had been feeling and keeping inside for the past few years.  I have a permanent mark on my body that reminds me of what happened.  Sometimes I the only way I can get out that emotion is through music.  It makes me feel better.” Ashley took a deep breath and continued.

     

     “For such a long time I have had people look past me and just to my scar with sympathy, indifference, disgust and so many other things.  I couldn’t even look at it myself with out having a range of emotions.  For so long I just felt like I was untouchable. Drugs and drinking let me hide that discomfort, they let me lie to myself and let me believe that I didn’t need anyone. Everyone thought they need to promise me something to help me through it, but nobody ever just looked at me with this scar and saw me…except for you.  That first night you touched it when we were at your house you did it with gentle hands.   When you asked what happened, you asked if I wanted to tell you and not for any other reason but to try to understand.  You weren’t promising anything or trying to fix me.  That meant more to me than you know. I haven’t felt ok with just being me around someone romantically in so long.”  She finished giving me a soft kiss.

    5. aww i love this story and i absolutely love the fluff! who needs angst? i know i dont..we’ll get enough of that in season 3 by the looks of it :(but i love your writing and i love the way you write ashley :)
