The Agent – (Chapter: 49 ways to say I care)

“Are you okay?” Spencer was pacing. I sat up and stared at her, unsure of what to do. My body was aching, still sore from the day’s events.

“Am I okay? Are you fucking crazy? My mother wants me dead, and you’re asking if I’m okay?” She was no longer pacing. Instead, she was standing still. She was just staring at me, no sign of emotion displayed on her face. I looked away, no longer able to look at her. There was nothing I could say or do. I looked down at my hands, nervously playing with the bedspread.

“I need a drink.” She had her jacket and was halfway out the door. I had to stop her. I needed to say something to her. I gulped and took in a deep breath of necessary oxygen.

“Wait. Please, just wait.” She stopped and turned around. I found myself getting out of the bed and moving closer to her.

“What?” She was angry at me and, really, she had every right to be. The words spoken earlier were still bouncing off the walls. Her face was still pale. I could tell she was on the verge of crying, maybe even on the verge of falling apart completely. I had my hand on her shoulder, but she wasn’t moving away. I was still fighting to come up with the words to make everything okay.

“Just stay…We’ll talk.” Clearly a bad choice of words…She pushed me away. Her blue eyes displaying such rage that I was momentarily frozen in surprise. That rage was directed at me. The room was silent. She was still standing in front of me, sending me glaring daggers of death. I so badly wanted to make things better, but I knew deep down that was more than impossible.

“I’m sorry,” I said. The words escaped my lips, and I didn’t even recognize the fear that I heard in them.

“You’re sorry?” She was pacing again. “My God, you shouldn’t be sorry! You’re not the one who wants me dead!” She was spitting her words out now, venom filling the room. She turned and headed to the door. I still so badly wanted to stop her but I couldn’t. I wasn’t brave enough to face her and her thoughts and her anger. I just watched as she got to the door, opened it and got halfway out.
