The Odyssey of Me – (Chapter: Coming Clean)

“First of all, Spencer’s not a freak, what’s freaky is that its 2010 and people like you still think they’re better than anyone whose even slightly different. Second of all, you’re kiddin’ right? Get this through your head I’m tellin’ ya I don’t wanna go near you or anyone like ya ever again” Glen responds angrily.

Unable to accept that any man could blow her off Madison draws her own conclusion as to what’s really going on.

“‘I don’t wanna go near you or anyone like ya ever again’? Wait a minute…Oh my God! You’re gay. ”

“Did mom unconsciously let somethin’ slip? I was jokin’, but maybe he really is gay?” Spencer whispers to himself.

Madison walks away laughing not allowing Glen to respond, and the bell rings.

Spencer wheels toward his first class.

Its almost lunchtime, rumors about Glen being gay are all over school. As with all rumors, this one has grown and spread. It’s taken on a life of its own. First, it was that Madison made a move on him, and he turned her down, because he’s gay. Another rumor was that she caught him making out with some freshman boy. A third rumor going around is that Glen’s being gay is one of the reasons why the Carlin’s left Ohio. According to the rumor, Glen was caught having sex with his old basketball coach after weight training there are also several others.

Spencer was dreading going to lunch.  It’s one thing to have to listen to the whispers, and jokes about his brother in class where there’s structure, but to go into a lunchroom with hundreds students are free to say or do pretty much whatever they want is another.  He’s taken full advantage of the five minutes extra he’s allotted to ensure he makes it to lunch on time, moving even slower than when he’s just trying to kill time until the bell rings, and Ashley’s class is over so they can go to the cafeteria together.

The bell has already rung. Ashley is waiting by her classroom door. She sees Spencer coming, and notices he doesn’t look too happy. She flashes him a smile, but he remains expressionless. When he finally reaches her, she fills him in on an idea she just thought of.
