“Nice meeting you, Ashley…Sorry, I’ve been at work the other times you’ve been here. He says with utmost sincerity.”

“We love you! The parents add.

“Love you too!” The boys again answer altogether.”

Ashley is smiling, in awe once again, of the families bond, unable to comprehend how they know each other so well that they can say the same thing at the same time.

They’ve made it to Ashley’s car. Glen and Clay are letting Spencer and Ashley figure out what they can do, opting not to help unless they’re needed. They know that Ashley has to learn how to do these things if she’s going to continue to be friends with their little brother. They also know that Spencer wants as little help as possible.

He wheels to the passenger’s side, locks his left break with his good left hand, then reaches across his body, grabs and locks the right break. He bends down and tries to lift the foot rests, but his feet get in the way. He sits back up with a frustrated look on his face. Ashley sees that he’s having trouble, and lifts the rests for him, earning a half smile from her friend. Then, carefully bracing himself first on his chair then, against Ashley’s car he gets in, body first before swinging his legs around and in.

Next, Ashley unlocks the breaks, wheels the chair to the back of her car, and opens the door. Glen, and Clay have to show her how to fold it up, but then, Ashley pleasantly surprises the Carlin boys by the relative ease by which she maneuvers the chair into the vehicle.
