Thursdays – (Chapter: Come Follow Me)

Ashley’s time in the office was unexpectedly short. Thinking that she would be in there the usual hour, Spencer was surprised when the girl came out after only ten minutes. As she was heading toward the exit, Ashley looked up, and locked eyes with the blonde. No words were said, but a huge, unknown feeling swarmed through Spencer, and she could feel every hair stand on her body. Even though the two barely knew each other, it was as though they shared some unexplainable connection. Spencer could also feel that something wasn’t quite right with the brunette, and as the girl walked out the front doors, this new emotion forced her to take action. The blonde grabbed her jacket, and  nearly leapt over the counter in her attempt to reach the front exit.

“Glenda, I’m taking my lunch break.”

“But it’s only nine o’clock!” It was no use. Spencer was already out the door midway through the sentence.

Spencer raced down the street to catch up with the brunette.

“Ashley! Ashley wait up!” The girl finally turned around.

“What do you want Spencer?” The voice wasn’t angry, but stern.

    “What’s going on?”

    “What are you talking about?”

Spencer looked at her like she was crazy. She was starting to get frustrated, and the conversation wasn’t getting anywhere. The girl was obviously trying to avoid the subject, but Spencer wasn’t having any of it.

“You show up at the office, acting like you’re the greatest thing since the cookie was invented, and then you disappear for nearly a month. Then today you show up and act like nothing happened!”

    “And your point?”

“What happened in that office three weeks ago?”

“Why do you care?” The brunette’s angry and defensive side was starting to surface.

    “Because I’m worried about you.”

The blonde’s tone was harsh, but Ashley could also feel something else there. Her voice was also laced with concern. It wasn’t the masked charade of worry that was used to put up a front, but seemed to be filled with true, genuine care. Ashley didn’t know if she wanted to open up to her. She didn’t know if she could trust this girl. All of the other people in the brunette’s life had only caused disappointment and pain. But the minute she decided to look up, and their gazes met, Ashley knew she was wrong. Every time she peered into those crystal blue eyes, she could feel the same emotion that Spencer had, swarm through her body. Ashley knew that, for some odd reason, this girl really did want to help, and it made her smile inwardly to know that there were at least a few good people still out in the world. Maybe this was the reason why her heart beat faster every time the blonde crossed her mind.

“There’s nothing to tell. My mom’s a cold hearted bitch and she always will be.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

    “Not really.”

“Well I can’t just leave you like this without knowing you’re going to be okay.” The blonde’s concern made Ashley smile. No one had ever put this much effort into checking on her well being, not even her own doctor.

“Then meet me tomorrow. Noon, at the restaurant right off the pier.”

Spencer just stared at her a moment before replying. “Okay.” And with those final words, the girls prepared to head off. Just as the two were about to depart, the blonde spoke one final time.

“Oh and Ashley? This isn’t a date.”
