    Torn Apart

Clay sadly shook his head ‘no’. "He had to leave at, like, six this morning. Heavy case load or something."

"Great," Spencer muttered mostly to herself as she cut the corner into the kitchen. "no help from that department."

Mrs. Carlin stood leaning against the sink, a cup of steaming coffee clasped between her hands. "Look who finally decided to come home." Her voice was low, and sounded hollow, as though she were holding onto her calm demeanor through sheer force of will.

         "Sorry."

"Sorry?" She walked around the table until she was standing before the daughter who shared her eyes, but in her opinion, within the last few months, shared little else. "All you have to say is that you’re sorry? Would your world have come crashing down if you had phoned me to let me know where you were?" Her voice was rising in pitch now, "You could have at least called Spencer!"

"Mom," Spencer began with a calmness and bravado she did not feel. "There’s a phone in this house too. If you were so worried you could just as easily called me." She made a show of checking her phone, "but as it stands, I don’t have any missed calls from the house number or your cell number. You couldn’t have been that worried."

Mrs. Carlin’s eyes darkened and narrowed dangerously in anger. "You are overstepping your boundaries young lady. I never had this kind of trouble from you until you started hanging out with that Ashley girl. She’s got you talking back, and staying out doing only God knows what all night!"

"Are you serious?" Spencer’s voice came out heavily tinged with sarcasm. "Glen is out gallavanting with Madison all night," She made quotation marks in the air, clearly mocking her mother, "’doing only God knows what’ and you don’t say a word to him when he comes waltzing in after spending a night out without a phone call."

"That’s because Glen is with a girl." Her mother spat out venomously.

"Isn’t that funny, because so was I." The coffee cup shattered to pieces on the ground as Mrs. Carlin’s palm made contact, with a resounding crack, upon the cheek of her daughter, sending her sprawling against the counter, her face a mixture of disbelief and rage. "You hit me." It was a statement, not a question.

Her mother looked to have regretted the blow, but stood fast. "I will not have you talking about that sort of relationship in my house. You will not have any contact with that girl or any other girl like her who leads such a life."

Spencer tasted the blood on her lip, and looked up at her mother, her eyes ice chips of some undiscernible emotion. "So I’m guessing you’re going to find a way to keep me from myself, huh?"

         "What did you say?"

"You heard me mom." She stared down her mother, refusing to drop her gaze.

         "Get out."

"Fine." Spinning on her heel, Spencer blew past her brother Clay who tried to call out to her, telling her their mom would calm down and she shouldn’t leave. She ignored him, throwing open the door, satisfied with the resounding bang it sent through the house as she stormed out the front and down the path, breaking into a jog until she rounded the corner, only then allowing herself the luxury of tears. Fumbling into her pocket for her phone she dialed Ashley’s number. "Come get me…" She sobbed into the receiver.

"I’m on my way right now, stay on the phone with me." What have they done to her? Ashley wondered as she raced around her room throwing on her shoes and grabbing her keys. What in the hell have they done to her?

    9. “But,” she reached up, tangling her hands in Spencer’s home-spun golden locks, pulling her in for a kiss that could have made a veteran porn star blush.
