We Bend, Then We Break – (Chapter: Twelve)

    CHAPTER TWELVE

All I could see was the massive amounts of sunlight that came pouring in through the many bay windows.  So much sun; it was nearly blinding me.  I raised my hand above my brow and squinted, trying to compose my surroundings and figure out where I was.  I blinked a few times and look around at  the empty living room from the couch I was lying on before last night came to me.  Spencer was no longer on the couch beside me and I suddenly felt panicked, wondering if she had left me alone.  I sat up, my cheek still a bit sore as I rubbed it softly and looked around again.  She was definitely nowhere in sight.  But as soon as I stopped moving, ceasing the noise that I was making, I heard a soft humming coming from the kitchen on my left.  I stood up and stretched, letting the bones in my back, crack – it wasn’t the most comfortable couch – and followed the noise.

I peeked into the kitchen and the sight cause a lopsided grin to spread across my face.  Spencer had her back to me, head phones shoved into her ears and was standing over the stove, cooking what smelled like pancakes.  She was doing a little dance as she cooked, shuffling from one foot to the other as her hums got louder, until she was singing the actual words out loud.

“You gotta spend some time, Love.  You gotta spend some time with me.”

She flipped one of the pancakes up into the air and caught it back into the pan with expertise, which made me wonder if she had told me that her father was a five star chef and I just couldn’t remember.

“And I know you will find, Love. I will possess your heart.”

I watched her for a moment more, thoroughly amused at her obliviousness of my presence.  Spencer placed the last pancake on a plate already stack high with at least ten.  This was the first time I noticed the rest of the food.  Beside the pancakes there were scrambled eggs, slathered in melted cheese, sausage links, toast – white and wheat – with butter already melting on the golden bread – and two large pitchers; one filled with orange juice, the other with coffee.
