Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 20: Es-ki-mo)
“Okay, found it. So…” Spencer raised her left eyebrow, a mischievous look on her face that made Ashley physically uncomfortable, as thick, viscous-like syrup felt as if it were flowing through her insides. She looked down at her cast and waited for the sensations to stop. They didn’t.
Spencer grabbed Ash’s cast with her left hand and placed it onto her lap, carefully.
“…Um, what do you want me to write?” Spencer held the marker poised above the cast, as if once she voiced what she wanted to write, the words would fade away into the sunlight, lost and forgotten.
Ash looked up at the lemon tree that covered an old shed that housed her father’s gardening tools. She hated that she kept having to squint.
“Um…write whatever you want. Just don’t draw anything, cause you suck at it.”
Spencer exhaled sharply, and bumped Ash’s arm with her elbow in annoyance.
“I so can draw! You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Ash grinned. “Yes, I do. Remember Valentine’s Day last year? You made me that heart with all those sparkly stickers around it with my name written inside? The heart was totally crooked and like, lopsided.”
Spencer’s smile faltered slightly and she grasped her lower lip with her teeth. She turned away from Ash’s face slightly, and leaned forward to brush something off her leg that Ashley couldn’t see. Just as quickly as she had moved, her face went back to Ashley’s, the same smile from before plastered across her face.
“Yah…okay, so I can’t draw.”
Ash smiled back, but she had seen it. She knew. Spencer’s slip up had not gone by unnoticed. Nor had Ashley’s comment. They both felt it, that creeping sensation. The warm syrup continued to traverse through Ash’s insides, but now it was joined by the company of guilt, as the two chatting amongst themselves, eventually combining together to form guilt syrup, soon to be more popular than Mrs. Butterworth’s or Aunt Jemima.
Ashley used her cast to club Spencer lightly over the head.
“I’m just kidding…you are good at drawing.”
“Yah, right!”
“No, really. That valentine you made me was amazing. Sometimes I think about it when I’m by myself and how long it must have taken for you to make it.”

That was the most intimate, loving, sad, thing ever. Poor Ashley…this chapter actually made me kind of angry only because Spencer claims that if she could she would stand next to Ashley and fight forever. But sometime later when Ashely runs over a bird while biking with Madison and Spencer…Spencer just leaves Ashley, telling her things are going to chanage and basically I don’t want to be your friend anymore. So it just killed me to here Spencer say that right now, knowing her action later are different.
OMG How you gonna leave it like that. lol by the way I love these last 3 chapters keep up the great work. ; )
well then the next chapter HAS to have Spencer kissing AShley!! ahh post soon!

I really, really loved the parallel of the tree in this chapter. First of all, the lemon tree being over “the shed” where they kissed was awesome. Then there’s the whole Ashley climbing the tree trying to a) make a gift for her mom and b) reaching the best lemon she can see only to get pulled down to the ground by her Dad. It’s like she was stopped from reaching something good (with the best intentions) and put back on the ground to rot with the other fallen fruit. Her Dad yanking his chest hairs and enjoying that pain while he watched the girl’s response was really hard to read I’m not quite sure what emotion I felt with that, but it was really hard for me to read. The lemon falling during that conversation was perfect especially the part where no one acknowledged it falling, but the all knew it had just like Ash. I LOVED the Viking drawing that was one of the most intimate and sweet scenes I’ve read about the girls. Finally, there’s Spencer’s admission that she wants to kiss Ashley and another lemon falls to rot with the others. It just makes sense with everything that happened later. I could be completely off base, please let me know if I am!
