Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 37: Vignettes)

    Spencer lets the tears drop.

“Are you okay?” Ashley’s presses her face deeper into the dip of Spencer’s neck.

She leans back into Ashley, allowing the warmth to overcome her, fill her.

    “Yah…these are good…they feel good.”

    ‘I focus on the pain

    The only thing that’s real’

They stained the pillow below her cheek, spreading out on the cotton like a wildfire. Her smile caught most of it, the wet cool against her cheek.

She remembered that day. That day she sold her soul. That day she had sold this girl out. She knew then, just as she knows now; that this moment was a marker; a brief checkpoint amidst the falling dominos.

This girl would hold her hand, all the way until the end of the road; where they would part with a kiss, Ashley watching her figure fade into the setting sun.

She couldn’t explain this, what was going on inside her; the seemingly malignant bug that diseased her brain. It didn’t matter really. What did matter was that she didn’t want it.

She couldn’t explain this, what was going on inside her, this undeniable passion, to press this girl inside her. It didn’t matter really. What did matter was that she wanted it.

    Desperately.

Ashley felt Spencer press her palm against her thigh. The scabs were jagged and prickly against her hand.

    “These will go away…Ashley…”

Spencer closed her eyes, imagining the words pour from her lips.

    “…But I won’t.”

    ‘Everyone I know

    Goes away in the end’

Ash’s eyes clenched shut, blocking out the light, Spencer’s hair tickling her lips. She had cracked; a tiny fissure opening within the solid shell of her exterior. There were no more falsities to create; her worlds were dissipating, fading out, the light bulb flickering in its final moments of life.

This was okay. It had to be. There could be only one of her, a single Ashley, living here, and just here, in this room, under the sheets, her body pressed against Spencer, her heart given room to breathe.

None of this was perfect, it never had been. But, it was real, and that had to mean something. No, not just something…Everything.

‘Beneath the stains of time…I am still right here.’
