    Ashley’s Christmas Eve Surprise…

    A groggy Kasey reached over her nightstand and grasped her cell phone limply.  “Hello?”  She answered still half asleep, her voice was raspy and hard to comprehend.

     

    “I can’t do this.”  A panicked voice echoed through the receiver.  ‘Not even a greeting, how rude.’  The young brunette buried her face into her pillow before re-emerging.

     

    “Can’t do what..?”  She asked almost treating the phone call as an integral part of her dream.

     

    “What I planned for her, this is too corny.”   Again the tone was squeaky and annoying.

     

    “Wait, who is this?”  Kasey quickly realized she had no idea to whom she was speaking with.  Reality finally clicked when her eyes sprung open, her attention solely focused on the erratic voice.

     

    “Urgh, it’s Ashley…Who else?!”  Her voice was tinged with annoyance.  “I can’t do this.”

     

    “What time is it Ash…”  Kasey glanced down at her watch and grunted.  “Holy hell it’s only five in the frikkin morning.  Are you kidding me, call back when I’ll actually listen which is in like…another 6 hours.”  She was about to hang up when the voice called out.

     

    “You better not hang up on me Dennison!”  Ashley held the phone a few inches away from her lips as she yelled, nearly waking her slumbering sister in the next room.

     

    “Ok chill man.  What’s wrong?”  Kasey hauled herself up and leaned back against her headboard.  “Why can’t you do this?”  She rubbed her eyes, yawning in between pauses.

     

    “This is just way too corny for my liking, plus I can’t remember the last time I spent Christmas Eve with someone.  What if she doesn’t like what I got her or-“ Kasey cut her skittish friend off.  “Jesus Ashley, grow some balls why don’t you.  You could give her a teddy bear made from lint you picked out of your dryer and she would be happy.”

     

    “I just don’t know if I can do this.  God…I’m such an ass.”  Ashley laughed at herself.  She was rarely nervous especially to this extreme but today was an exception.  She hadn’t slept all night, most of her time was spent staring up at the ceiling and going over the plan.

     

    “Look, you can’t back out now.  Too much time and effort was put into this.  Just haul ass and git er done.”  Ashley smiled into the phone upon hearing those words escape her friend’s lips.

I actually listened to the Elton John song as I read along with the lyrics, which actually made me cry. Wow, your writing is quite simply breathtaking. One of my favorite lines: “No wine, huh?” Spencer grinned. ~ “I know Santa’s making an appearance later, I don’t want to amplify your chances of being on the naughty list tonight.” Ashley winked earning herself a playful tap on the arm before the two of them indulged. – Charming and cute!
