    Young Love

     

    It was a gloriously sunny August day in Griffith Park, and the father-daughter pair of Arthur and Spencer Carlin were making their way along the dirt path, marveling at the sites and sounds around them. The small blonde looked a bit intimidated by the amounts of people present in this town, and you could tell by her knitted brows she didn’t quite approve.

    “Spencer, sweetheart, it’s not so scary. I know it is a big change from Ohio, but change is good. You’ll see.” Arthur encouraged the 9 year old Spencer, who merely gave an uncertain nod.

    “But I miss my friends…” She complained softly, looking down at the dirt as her small tennis shoes scuffled along.

    “You’ll make more, I promise.” He spoke, taking her hand and guiding her down a different trail, his heart soaring as he gazed down at the blonde head of his daughter. She’d grown so much, so quickly, and it was just staggering to him. He enjoyed these moments where he could just spend time with her and give her advice, because he wasn’t ignorant enough to think it’d last forever. Some day she’d become a adult and choose her own path, and his words won’t be the only deciding influence in her life.

    “…Yeah, I guess…” Her face brightened considerably when she spotted a jungle gym and a group of children who looked to be her age. The monkey bars happened to be her favorite past time, and seeing the familiar gleaming row was an enormous comfort to her young heart.

    Arthur’s features softened into a wide grin as he spotted the object in the distance, his hand releasing his daughters, “Go ahead Spence, I’ll watch.” He encouraged, giving her a light pat on the back. Like a horse out of a racing chute, Spencer took off, eagerly scaling the mass of metal, wood and plastic with small yet nimble fingers.

    Spencer arrived at the top of the object, her mind debating what to do first. There was another girl roughly her height sitting atop the monkey bars, and the small blonde made the decision to join her. Her father had said she needed to make new friends, and this girl seemed to have pretty good taste in seating. Hoisting herself up between the bars with an agility only children and athletes seem to posses, she took a seat on the edge beside her, the clink of her belt on the metal attracting the attention of the curly headed brunette.
