    Bette and Tina: Picking up where Episode 412 left off.

    CHAPTER 1

    Bette switched off the ignition and sighed heavily as she momentarily struggled to free herself from the seatbelt. The ninety minute drive on the rustic, two-lane highway between Jodi’s work-site and the quaint little bed-and-breakfast had not only given the brunette ample time to ponder the state of her life, but also permitted the fatigue of cross-country travel to catch up with her.

    Bette eased open the door of the rental car and firmly planted her boot-clad foot on the dirt driveway below. She chuckled to herself as she caught a glimpse of her attire reflected in the window of the closing car door. Bette was no stranger to a well-worn pair of Levi’s. But, she couldn’t figure out how she now found herself in dusty work boots and an over-sized flannel shirt. Then again, she wasn’t quite sure how she found herself in her current relationship situation, either. She swallowed hard as she turned away from the car and walked towards the lobby of the small inn she’d be calling home for at least the next couple of nights.

    When Bette had first arrived at Jodi’s work site, she was running on a high fueled by a mixture of emotion and adrenaline. This was by far the grandest romantic gesture she’d made in her adult life, and how Jodi would react was beyond Bette’s powers of prediction. She’d been relieved and ecstatic to find that Jodi wanted to see her, wanted to try to work things out. Despite all the inevitable comparisons, there really was one main difference between Jodi and Tina — Jodi wanted Bette and made sure Bette knew it. Bette could feel the intensity of Jodi’s desire burning through both of them as they kissed beside Bette’s grand romantic offering.

    Bette had wanted to stay at the site for the rest of the day, basking in the warmth that came from reconciling with Jodi. But, Jodi had suggested that she could get her day’s work done more quickly without the distraction of Bette’s presence, and following Tina’s sage advice, Bette had acquiesced. The long, winding drive back to the inn witnessed Bette’s emotional journey from exhilaration to contentment to questioning to doubt.

    Fifteen minutes into the drive, she knew she cared for Jodi, but was feeling weighed down by the need to reinvent herself to meet Jodi’s expectations, while Jodi seemed to sacrifice so little. Although she hadn’t made her reaction known at the time, she had been stunned when Jodi had cautioned Bette not to break her heart. After all, it had been Jodi who had ended their relationship and fled across the country.

How bold and brave of Tina to start such a distraction while Bette is on the opposite coast, wooing another woman. But, of course, Bette and Tina are soul mates, so of course, it must end happily.
