    17 Reasons Why… (Chapter 1)

She knew that even if Alice and Shane had been right, and Tina had wanted her back, there were no guarantees. They had Angelica to think about. Bette was terrified of doing or saying the wrong thing. And Tina still seemed to want anyone who wasn’t Bette. So, for the last half hour of her drive, Bette resigned herself to accepting a lifelong friendship with Tina, for Angelica’s sake, while she tried to figure out how to make things work with Jodi.

Now, as Bette dragged her tired feet up the porch stairs at the Inn, she ran her hand through her dark mane of curls and let out a frustrated sigh. She forced herself to smile as she tugged open the front door and stepped onto the dark hardwood floor of the lobby. She was greeted warmly by one of the owners of the small inn, who waved and smiled at the brunette.

"Ms. Porter, these were just delivered for you." The innkeeper told Bette cheerfully as she set a large bouquet of mismatched flowers on top of the desk.

It only took Bette a fraction of a second to know just by the look of the bouquet that the flowers were not from Jodi. She didn’t need to see her name written in delicate, plum-colored script to know who was responsible for the unconventional arrangement. The sight of the peculiar grouping immediately reminded her of the day early on in her relationship with Tina when the blond had commented on how "boring" flowers were.

Bette had then spent literally hours explaining to Tina the meanings of different flowers. From that point on, they’d each sent the other somewhat nontraditional flower arrangements to pass along an intended message without the need for words. When Tina had left Bette after the affair with Candace, Bette had sent multiple, carefully-chosen bouquets to try to begin to communicate her remorse. She recognized a few of the stems in this most recent arrangement as quite similar to some of her offerings to Tina during that time.

"Ms. Porter, the delivery person left some specific instructions." The soft voice of the innkeeper interrupted Bette’s thoughts. "Strange, but specific. I’m supposed to ask you to read the card before you walk away." The woman’s tone was calm, but curious.

Bette tentatively reached towards the small rectangle of crisp, white linen, her fingertips making only the slightest contact with the textured paper of the envelope. She removed the card cautiously, as though she expected it to burst into flames or otherwise disappear at any moment. After taking a deep breath and holding it, she gingerly removed the tiny card and felt goosebumps form on her neck as her eyes roamed the familiar script.

Finding her eyes momentarily unable to focus, Bette released the captive breath. She looked up at the innkeeper, who was holding out a single, red rose in full bloom.

"The instructions were to give you this after you read the card." She explained, as Bette reached out and accepted the lone blossom. "Not sure why or what it means." The woman continued with a shrug, as Bette looked up, her disbelieving eyes traveling the entire length of the flawless green stem before settling on the perfect, crimson petals.

"A single rose in full bloom," Bette paused and bit her lower lip before continuing with her explanation. "A single rose in full bloom means ‘I still love you.’"

The tall brunette lowered her gaze back to the card she still clutched in one hand, glanced briefly at the flower arrangement still lying on the desk, then looked back at the card, whispering the words under her breath.
