They had attempted to offer support with well-intentioned words, but they had felt hollow. Behind my back, whispers had lingered. I’m sure they had thought I would break. But I hadn’t. I had simply pressed forward. I had failed Bette, not being able to fulfill a pregnancy and give her the daughter she had dreamed of. The deep, profound sadness in her eyes had been unbearable. I had just had to keep on going, until I would be strong enough to consider the possibility of trying again.
I closed the tap and dried my hands. When I returned, the glass of Pastis was left half empty at the table. Renee had finally decided to give me a break. I sighed relieved and took my phone out.
Tina: I have plans tonight. ;)
Bette: With whom?
Tina: You.
Bette: Doing what?
Tina: You.
Bette: Mmm, can’t wait. See you later. X
I put my phone away and cringed at my life.
3.2 Tina
When I had started to work here, my first request had been to place this polished wooden desk in the corner so I could take advantage of the breathtaking view over Paris. The glass windows, extending from floor to ceiling, allowed me to feel like I was part of the city’s energy even when I worked.
’Mrs. Porter-Kennard?’ My assitant’s voice carried a hint of shyness as she hesitated at the doorway of my office. ’I was wondering if, perhaps, you have a moment to review your agenda for next week. If not, I can return later.’
Claudia had joined the team just over a year ago, straight out of college. At the beginning, I had asked her to call me ’Tina’, then I had encouraged her, then I had practically begged her to do so, but her shyness wouldn’t let her so eventually I had given up. Gesturing toward the chair beside my desk, I responded, ’Please. Go ahead.’
’Uhm Monday.’ she began. Her Ada Monroe look, from the movie Cold Mountain, where Nicole Kidman played an introvert farm girl, was in full force. If the costume department would lent her a flower hat, she would complete the image. ’You have your regular staff meeting in the morning. Then, you have an hour with Mr. Jean-Pierre for that you might want to consider that he asked for the budget overview. Lunch with Ms. Kate. In the afternoon you have a conference call with the US office. And that would be it for Monday.’ Her innocent blue eyes waited.

Good thing that Tina finally voiced what she needed: Bette at home in their appartement. Tina off of work for a while should give them some time to talk. If Bette gets some free time as well – without being fired.
Thanks for posting!
Beautiful written rewrite, the details of everything, the insights of what Tina is thinking and feeling and she finally voiced what she needed, and that was for Bette to come home.
Truly devastating if you loose your child and even more devastating if you close of your pain, trying desperately to move on. Plagued by nightmares of that night you loose your daughter. Feeling guilty because you were not able to give your wife the daughter you so wanted. Both of them feel guilty, they need to talk about it, share there feelings, their grieve instead of trying to hide it.
Bette coming home is a good start.
Look forward to read the next chapter!
