6 Months- chapter 17
Alice looked at Tina and realized that she did not recognize her. The emotions that were crossing her face were to fast and too changing to read. She said again “Tina”.
But Tina could not hear her. There was a roaring in her ears that would allow no sound in. What she did not realize though were the sounds coming from her body. There was a moaning that turned into a slight whaling that had everyone on the terrace, as well as some inside, turned towards her direction. She had still not moved, standing there with Bette’s letter in her hand, trying to see which way to go.
She took a step backwards, trying to move towards the interior of the restaurant to get to the front door in order to get her closer to Bette, but she was unsure of her footing. The step back that she had taken, backed her into a table of a couple who was just staring at her opened mouth, wondering what could have possibly brought on this amount of pain. She bumped into their table, knocking over their drinks, looking at them as if they did not exist, and changed her direction. The drinks spilled onto the ground and she still seemed not to notice.
“I have to leave here” she kept repeating in her mind.
“Where is she? I have to get to her” was all she could think.
Her legs allowed her to cross the short distance to the entrance of the restaurant. Once inside, the terror of what was happening continued to grow like an out of control avalanche.
All she saw was the front door. All anyone else saw was a terrified broken woman, emitting pained sounds with tears pouring down her face.
Dana and Shane stood as if to offer some assistance but backed off when they saw the expression on Tina’s face. They knew that there was nothing that they could do. This truly was between Bette and Tina now.
Shannon, not having this same knowledge, approached Tina and reached a hand out to her.
“NO!” Tina screamed at her.
“But Tina, I want to help” she pleaded.
“Don’t ***** touch me. You are not her, none of you are her” she screamed wildly looking around the restaurant. “None of you are her” she repeated in a quieter, defeated voice.
While facing the restaurant, she backed up to the front door, begging her body to continue. Her entire body was trembling, on the verge of total collapse.
“She would not have left me” her mind continued to irrationally reason.
“She is here, she has got to be”.
As her back hit the door, she turned towards her friends who just looked back at her with expressions of utter demise. She made no acknowledgement of even recognizing them, and simply pushed the door open, welcoming the outdoors.
She knew where she had to go. As the fog was starting to clear, a determination started to replace the indecision and lifelessness of the past seven months.
She took a deep breath and willed herself to continue to move. Before she knew it, she was running again, but this time, instead of only knowing where she had been, knew where she was going.
