“Bette… Babe…” she tried again, but the brunette, her wife, her world, stood.
And left the room. And was her pattern whenever something was too emotional for the brunette to address. So, Tina turned, suitcases in tow and walked out the door to leave for her flight to Singapore, the sound Bette made reverberating in her mind, her heart. A straggled cry of air combined with a shocked hurt. And it followed her out the door, into the uber, attaching to her ears like mist on a foggy day. The snow from the Christmas storm stuck to her boots, a reminder of the chill between them, of the quiet stillness of a normally festive holiday.
Moving to New York had been for her after all… the job offer from Focus Features a big step professionally and Bette’s work with Kelly meaning her presence in New York made sense. But the driving force behind the move had been for Tina’s job, Bette more than supportive of the decision. God, they had been so happy in New York at first, Angie settling into school like a pro, Bette’s work taking off to the point where she was able to buy Kelly out and own her own studio… finally, her dream realized…. and everything was so perfect, so on track…. That was until… it all unraveled.
But no, she wouldn’t think about that. Not now.
By the time Bette arrived at the school to pick up Angie after detention, she had composed herself. Tina was headed almost all the way around the world… again. The day after Christmas no less and most likely she would miss New Year’s as well. And the last words they spoke to each other were of something too terrible to contemplate. Divorce. Bette couldn’t shake it, that word… divorce… being uttered by her wife… that word coming out of a mouth she loved kissing, a mouth that knew her intimately, that always had the right words to soothe her, show how much she loved her.
Amazing how the same mouth that used to whisper endearments now spoke of ugly finality. Amazing that Bette had let things go this long, maybe she pushed Tina to this decision by shutting her out. Bette knew her inability to talk about what happened was a huge part of the problem. But no, that wasn’t quite fair as Tina would probably say herself. There was no single reason for their current state, rather a series of missteps and issues, fate conspiring to pull them apart.
