A TiBette Love Story: Please – 1
It was a gloomy Saturday evening and Bette’s desk was in its usual state, surrounded by contracts, prints, mail and miscellaneous paperwork. Her goal was to diminish the ‘to be done’ piles and go out with her friends.
Alice had already called twice before reminding her that there were ‘big plans’ tonight. Dana, Shane and she would be taking her out for a rowdy night. Alice was speaking in her usual excited happy hyper state. Bette had lost focus somewhere in between Alice’s ramblings of ‘strippers’ and ‘tequila’ and was busy sorting through photographs of art work.
“Are you paying attention, Porter?” Alice screamed out.
“Yeah…strippers…tequila…got it. Listen Alice, I really have to finish up some stuff or I’ll never get out of here.”
“Call you in about two hours and you better be ready!” Alice warned, before hanging up.
Saturday, after all, was her true ‘Friday Night’ since the Bette Porter Gallery was open noon to five from Tuesdays through Saturdays. Yet, once again, work consumed much of her energy and time.
Two hours and a half hours after the staff had been long gone, Bette had just about reached her quitting point. Bette swiveled in her leather desk chair, let out an exasperated sigh and tossed her pen unto the messy desk.
‘It’s been a long day.’ Despite all that she had accomplished, the task of completing what still needed to be done was daunting. She looked around from one section to the next and gently massaged her temple with her fingers. ‘Damn! Feels like the paperwork is actually multiplying!’
Bette was brought back to reality by the ringing of her cell phone. She looked at the screen flashing ‘ALICE’ and flipped the phone open to answer.
“Shit!” Bette had just realized the time.
“Most people just say hi,” Alice laughed.
Bette removed her glasses, set them on her desk and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “I’m sorry I lost track of time, Alice.”
“Hey, no excuses. You have to get a move on it.”
“I can’t tonight Alice. I’ve had the worst fucking day and I’m completely exhausted,” Bette said in a tired voice.
