When Tina emerged, Bette was standing in the propped open door. She was smoking in nothing but her white collared shirt. Tina quickly noticed two things. Bette had not bothered to button most of her buttons and the overwhelming aura of melancholy. She moved closer, not bothering to announce her presents.
Bette heaved a sigh. She leaned back without looking back. She knew Tina would be there to hold her.
Tina resisted the urge to wrap her arms around Bette. Instead, she reached around for the cigarette. “What are we doing?”
Bette couldn’t find enough courage to look at the woman she had once pronounced undying love for. “Hurting each other, again.”
“Will it ever stop?”
“If I can’t stop punishing myself, you can’t forgive me but we can’t manage to walk away for each other, then no.”
“What are we going to do?”
Bette glanced over her shoulder. For the second time that night Tina stood half in the shadows, at once her angel of mercy and her greatest tormentor. “I think we need to decide what exactly it is that we want from each other.”
Tina placed her hands on Bette’s slender hips, forcing her to turn away from the door. She ran her hand through her ruffled hair and remembering Bette’s cigarette, took a drag. She opened her mouth to speak but could only manage a sigh.
“What is it?”
Tina met Bette’s gaze with one of her own. “Henry asked me to marry him.”
Bette leaned away from the light cascading through the open door. She needed the cover of darkness. “I see,” she said in the iciest voice she could muster.
Tina stepped into the doorway trying to recover Bette’s warmth. “I’m…”
“Don’t.” Bette leaned forward to take possession of the cigarette. As she settled back into the darkness she felt her aloof façade slip back into place. “So when is the happy day?”
Tina was engulfed into a sea of misery. It was oh so familiar and oddly comforting. “I haven’t actually said yes.” She could just barely make out the outline of Bette’s face.
“Why not? Isn’t it everything you have always wanted?”

Wow. Tina’s “Until next time” actually sent a chill through me. In fact, it kind of irked me. You can’t help but feel Bette’s pain here. Fantastic ending.
I haven’t read the sappy ending yet but my prediction is this is the better ending.
Sort of one of those can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em deals. Must be bad if they’re doing the deed at Bedbugs R Us.
I would call it the Lust Motel.but like funnyone the best. If she marrys Henry will she always want that one more time? thanks
Jesus! That was just plain heartbreaking..and…what a fricking waste of love, if you asked me!! Dang V, this truly got my blood a boilin!! Now can I read the happy one? LOL Thanks!
Yeah heartbreak hotel more like it! Thanks for saving the sappy last..I’m off to reading it now.
damn this was intense and sad…i’m ready for the happy one now
Sigh…I read the other ending and I want Bette & Tina to be together, but in a sick way I like the way this ending was written. I think this story should go a few more chapters. I think Bette is selling herself short and Tina is full of sh*t. How can you equate being a good mother to being with a man in a loveless relationship? As long as Bette is there for Tina’s sexual needs she will continue to use her and Bette deserves better. It’s funny how Bette cheated on Tina but Tina is doing the same thing to Henry…even though she dosen’t love him it’s still CHEATING. I would love to see you add a few chapters where Bette is looking like she is gonna settle down and Tina realizes she isn’t gonna have her cake and Bette too…and maybe she’ll come around so they can actually be together. Cause right now all their relationship is is sex. More please.
Damn this is sad and heartbreaking!
well that harsh but sweet in a sick way. thanks.
Yeah, in a really sick way, I love this ending more. I think, well, I’m almost positive it has to do with my film noir obsession (gotta give a film student a break). Or, also, this kind of pain is a sort of beautiful torture, and at least there’s an almost promise of one more time.
