    After burn Chapter 10: Rings

It was early morning, the sun had barely risen and not a single soul was up except for Tina Kennard. “*****” she swore under her breath, feverishly looking around the house for something. She looked under the couch, ‘it’s not here.’ she thought, pacing around and racking her brain, ‘Where the ***** did I put it?’ She pulled the cushions off of the sofa to no avail, she still couldn’t find what she was looking for, ‘Oh god where did I put my ring?’ she asked herself, knowing that there would be no answer. ‘I could’ve sworn I placed it by the dresser…’ she told herself over and over again, but then again she was really angry with Bette at the time, ‘For all I know I could’ve thrown it over a cliff.’

She let out a small sigh knowing that this wasn’t the first time she found herself in this sort of dilemma. Tina stood there in a wordless frenzy, feeling a sentimental rush of memories fill her head. ‘The earring.’ she mused, thinking back to the day she first met Bette, and the life-changing kiss they shared. ‘I have to get that ring back!’ she desperately said to herself.

Tina played a game of mental tug of war with herself until she finally decided on doing what she just did next.

Alice was lying comfortably in her bed, the day was over and now she finally had time to herself. She was earnestly reading her way through some random magazine when she heard a knock coming from her front door, Alice pretended that she wasn’t there, thinking that if she didn’t answer the door the person behind it would take the hint, and realize that she really wasn’t in the mood to talk. The knocks came slowly at first, and faded for a while, then gradually they came back growing more and more urgent as time passed, making it unbearable for her to concentrate on her reading. “Hold on!” she yelled all the way from the bedroom, irritation seeping its way into her voice.

She opened the door, not even bothering to check who would be on standing in front of her. What she saw next took her by surprise.

“Dana?” Alice nearly gasped, her eyes expressing her disbelief.

Dana didn’t speak, she just leaned in and kissed Alice. Alice tried to protest but, “Who am I kidding?” she thought, and pulled Dana closer to her. The kiss was gentle and unsure when they began, and developed into a hungry, power driven one as time went by. ‘Damn Dana can kiss.’ Alice thought.

Dana kissed her way down onto Alice’s neck, kissing the sensitive area just behind Alice’s ear. Dana felt Alice shiver and she moved further, exploring Alice’s body, finally settling on kissing just above Alice’s collarbone, tugging on the bottom of Alice’s shirt, asking for permission to take it off. Alice nodded in approval. Dana slowly tried to peel Alice’s white cotton shirt off, until something stopped her…

A faint ringing could be heard all throughout Alice’s apartment awakening her from her sleepy state. ‘*****!’ she thought, but she knew she didn’t have enough time to ponder on the dream she just had.

“Al?” Alice heard a voice whisper into the phone’s receiver. It took some time before a groggy Alice could realize who was calling her at 4 in the morning. “Tina?”

    “Yes.”

“Are you okay? Where the ***** are””

    “Alice I’m fine… I’m here at the house… with Bette…”

“What?! Where?!” Alice shook her head thinking that she was getting delirious, “Bette? Bette Porter?” she stammered into the phone barely being able to process Tina’s words.

“Yeah, Al. I don’t think I know any other Bette’s…” Tina smiled.

“But why” and how? Jesus Tina! You could’ve at least at some point, found the time to pick up a phone somewhere and tell me that you weren’t coming home! I mean Christ, I’m freaking out here… Do you have any idea how worried you got me? I’m a freakin’ mess Tina… a freakin’ mess! “

Tina couldn’t help but smile at what Alice had just said, but at the last minute she chose ignore Al’s statement, knowing she didn’t have much time before Bette woke up.

“Listen Al, I really need your help, I’ll explain everything to you when you get here.”

“Well atleast tell me what you need me for.”

Tina hesitated for a while, “I need help finding something…”

    “What is it?

“My wedding band. See I kind of lost it, and I don’t want Bette to know that I…” Tina trailed off.

Alice chose not to ask for anymore details, opting instead to let Tina explain at her own pace. There was a long pause before she answered:

“Fine, I’ll be there after Bette leaves for work… Actually can I ask Dana and Shane to help too?”

“Sure I can use all the help I can get… And Al?” Tina said as discreetly as she possibly could.

    “Yeah?”

    “Thank you…”

    “You’re welcome… And Tina?”

    “Hmm?”

“Don’t ever call me at 4 o’clock in the ***** morning again!”

Alice heard Tina chuckle from the other line. “I love you too Al!”
