All The Fallen ~*~ Chapter 10 ~*~ Not Me

Sam was in the PicU, the pediatrics Intensive Care Unit.  She’d delivered a preemie two days earlier and her every waking moment was spent sitting outside the PicU in a rocking chair.  Watching, making sure the tyke was taking breath every second of every minute.

Most of the PicU nurses knew her well. Sam had teetered between working the PicU and the ER; ultimately she’d chosen the green ER scrubs over the purple PicU scrubs.

Her eyes were closed, and her mind was on the verge of sleep as the rocking slowed in the chair.  Her spiked blonde hair swaying as she rocked.  A sweet young angel with mischief in her blood.

Lara stood in the hallway, staring at Sam.  She’d tried twice now to get in touch with her, but she’d hung up on her once.  The second time she’d gone as far as changing her phone number.  Lara had a lot to make up for, and she needed to start.  Now.

“Can I help you, miss?”  A nurse asked as she left the ‘box’ as some interns called it. Lara shook her head and pointed to Sam who hadn’t stirred yet.

“She’s in a raunchy mood.”  The nurse told Lara and Lara was more than sure she was the reason.

Lara walked over to Sam, kneeling next to the woman who had been nothing but kind to her.  In fact, Sam had been the one to finally pull her out of the drug-induced haze that Susan had put her in.  Sam had done an illegal rapid detox and much later, Lara had repaid her by blackmailing her into helping her set up Dana.

“Sami?”  Lara said softly and the young doctor’s stormy grey eyes snapped open; her jaw was set on her handsome face and she stood up.  The rocking chair flew back, and Sam’s eyes turned ice cold.

“Get out of here, Perkins.”  Sam said in a soft but menacing voice.  Lara’s blue eyes pleaded with her to let her speak.  Sam was having none of it. She pushed by her, grabbing her hand and yanking her down the hallway to the elevator.  Lara stumbled, but Sam kept pulling her.
