All The Fallen *~* Chapter 26 ~*~ Won’t Stand Down

Lacey pulled the book and the small clump of hair out of her pocket, and laid them down on the small tabletop.  She had a fleeting moment of reluctance, not for any prick of conscience.  No, she was not the least bit hesitant to do what she needed to do.  She wasn’t about to let herself be thrown over again, especially not by one of Shane’s closest friends.

But the last time, she had instructions on how to use it, this odd musty old book.  She couldn’t even read half the writing.  This time…well, she’d figure it out.  After all, there were pictures.  Lots of pictures.  She thumbed through the book, looking for something that seemed likely enough to remove Tonya from the picture so she could move in on Dana again.  With a satisfied grunt, she picked out the page she wanted and began to clumsily sound out the words formed by the strange lettering.

She cocked her head and began to recite the ritual that was depicted in the hand drawn characters of the book, smelling like age and leather and something far worse, aged blood.  The figures seemed to shift, and just for a moment, Lacey thought she felt the book cover ripple in her hands.  She shook it off and focused.

Her voice rose, and then softened as she repeated the verses.  A low droning hum filled her chest, and her skin began to tingle.  For a passing moment, her brow furrowed, thinking that it didn’t feel like this the last time.  It’s a different spell, dummy, she scolded herself and continued.  A wild smile spread across her lips as the orb that had appeared the other time she’d done this emerged from the hair that she’d pulled roughly from Tonya’s brush, this time a vibrant orange, shifting then moving, floating out of the alcove and down the hallway.  Finding its target from the DNA in Tonya’s hair, it wrapped itself around the prone woman, who began to moan and thrash, as if fighting off a bad dream.

Then it was done.  “Take that, bitch.”  Lacey muttered, and laughed.  She tucked the book back into her broad front pocket, and went looking for the final ingredient for the second half of the spell.  But she wouldn’t find it here.  She slipped down the hallway and made her way quietly toward the back door.
