All the Small Things–Chapter 4
“The Virgin Suicides? Sophia Coppola?” Tina tried.
Bette’s eyes widened. “Yeah, I have that. I went to see it at the theater. You worked on that?” Tina nodded, as she twirled her pasta with her fork. “Wow. You must be amazing.”
Tina blushed slightly. She would never get used to being complimented. A few seconds of awkward silence went on before she decided to speak again. She looked over at Bette. The brunette didn’t seem to notice how awkward the air around them became. Or maybe she didn’t care. “I do my fair share of work. So what kind of movies do you enjoy watching?”
Bette laid down her container and thought for a while. “Well, I watch anything. I’m not that picky when it comes to movies. But I am partial to a drama or a documentary.”
“What’s your favorite movie?” Tina asked, as she made inroads in her pasta.
Bette rubbed her chin. “I don’t want to tell you, it sounds so clichéd.”
Tina nudged her good-naturedly. “Come on, I won’t laugh.”
Bette relished the slight contact between them, but decided she wouldn’t show how pleased she was with the teasing. “You won’t?” Bette asked. “Why don’t you go first?”
“Well that’s easy. My favorite movie would always be Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Tina declared, finishing off her pizza. She then downed the rest of her drink. “Audrey Hepburn’s acting and Truman Capote’s writing created this wonderful masterpiece. Not to mention the fact that the score was simply amazing. It was such a romantic movie, you know? I’ve seen it at least five times. I just thought that kind of thing was real. Happy ever afters and stuff like that.” She then started crying a bit, as Bette looked on worriedly. “What the… I can’t even form a straight sentence anymore. I’m sorry you had to see this.” Tina wiped her eyes with some tissue.
“Hey,” Bette said, smoothing out Tina’s back. “It’s okay. It’s always like that after the shock comes off. Everybody cries after it happens. The thing is, you get up and get going.”
A few minutes later, Tina was up, getting a bottle of Pellegrino. With her eyes still puffy, she turned to Bette and said, dryly, “Hey. You didn’t tell me what your favorite movie was.”
Bette chuckled at the comment, causing Tina to smile a little.
“Fine. Don’t laugh.” Bette said, putting the empty containers next to Tina’s on the table. She stretched her arms and let out a little yawn. “My favorite movie’s Casablanca.”

I love that Bette and Tina are bonding. Tina’s inner joy at Bette’s dinner statement was good to see. I am off to read more!
