"How are you doing?" Bette asked as she stepped onto the patio.
Tina was sitting on a lounge chair, with her sunglasses on, in the shade of one of the trees.
    "Great. I’m enjoying the day."
"It’s going to happen tomorrow," Bette said.
"Let’s hope so," Tina replied. "You wouldn’t think they’d push the decision to the fall after accepting the case for March arguments."
"Leaving it this late seems to be simply delaying the inevitable," Bette said.
"Decisions have to be written; explanations given."
"Unless it falls to the technicality of standing," Bette said. "Then it’s a non decision."
"They should have just declined to hear the case if that was going to be the end result."
"Judges aren’t infallible," Bette said. "They can make mistakes."
"Do you have any plans for the labor day long weekend?" Tina asked.
    "Nothing comes to mind."
"Do you want to get married that weekend, then have a little holiday together?" Tina asked.
"That’s the weekend you’ve decided on if this case goes as hoped for?"
"Either way, that’s the weekend I think we should get married."
    "Either way?"
"If we can get married in California, great," Tina said. "If not we’ll pick a state where it’s legal and do a weekend trip."
"First of all, yes, we can get married that weekend," Bette started. "But second of all, what changed your mind about waiting for California to recognize marriage equality?"
"We’re getting married eventually, and we both think the official union matters," Tina explained. "And I want you to be my legally recognized spouse."
"If it’s here, we’ll have a huge celebration," Bette said.
    "Whatever you’d like," Tina said.
"I want us to be married."
    "Me too," Tina said.
"But I’m still excited for the morning news," Bette said. "For everyone in the state, and for the prestige that will inevitably be attached to your reputation as a result all your work."
"The decision will be delivered at ten o’clock eastern."
"We won’t have left for work yet," Bette said.
"We can enjoy the rest of a lazy Sunday and expect the best in the morning," Tina said.
"I already got the news I was waiting for," Bette replied. "The rest will be merely icing on the cake."
