"There’s an article in this morning’s LA Times about Prop 8," Bette turned the page and continued reading as Tina poured herself a coffee. "It suggests it could be overturned on the technicality of standing."
"It’s a very real possibility," Tina said. "We’re hoping to convince the Attorney General to make the decision from the ninth circuit statewide if it gets sent back."
"You knew about this?"
"There’s still a lot going on behind the scenes, even if the case itself is over," Tina said. "Some legal scholars are suggesting only the two counties where the plaintiffs live could be affected. Some are even suggesting only the two couples who sued would get the right to marry."
"That would simply delay the inevitable," Bette said. "Why not legalize it across the state if the Supreme Court is going to put the decision back in the hands of local government?"
"That’s the argument we’ve been putting forth," Tina said.
"And here I thought you were just going for coffee and hanging around art museums all the time; you’re actually working."
"Yes, Bette, actually working…"
"For our right to marry?"
"For everyone’s right to marry."
"Too early for such a conversation?" Bette asked.
"Too early in the day or…?"
"Too early in the relationship," Bette clarified. "But early in the day too, I guess."
"You know my powers of deductive reasoning are lacking first thing in the morning," Tina said. "I’m more emotional and less practical. Plus, before I met you, I didn’t think I was the marrying type."
"You hadn’t lived with anyone before either, and so far so good," Bette said.
"I hardly think two weeks is a fair test," Tina replied. By now they were both seated at the island. "I’m still revelling in the extra sleep I’ve been getting since I moved."
"You don’t think it’s all the sex that’s helping you feel rested?"
"That’s beneficial as well," Tina replied, leaning over to offer Bette a kiss on her shoulder.
"You crashed hard last night," Bette said.
"Thanks for helping," Tina replied. "Could you pass me the Arts Section?"
"You don’t want to see this article?"
