Angelica’s Fifth Fourth ~ Chapter Seven

    “Mama B, wait!”

Bette was already outside the room, checking the contents of the tote bag she had packed, when she head Angelica’s plea. She turned around and leaned through the doorway.  She saw her daughter kneeling on the floor pulling objects out of the box of toys she had chosen for, and Bette had shipped to, their vacation.

    “What’s wrong Boo?”

A sniffle was audible in her voice as Angelica replied, “It’s lost.”

Bette put the tote on the floor and knelt next to the child, “What’s lost?”

    “Princess book.”

“I don’t think it’s lost.  Let me help.”

Mother and daughter, working as a team, made the search go much better. When Bette pulled a huge teddy bear aside, Angelica pulled the revealed book from the box and held it up to her mother, “Look!”

    “Good, Boo, you found it.”

Angelica nodded as she jumped to her feet and placed the book in Bette’s tote.

“Are we going to read at the beach?”  Bette asked.  She wasn’t surprised. The four-year old would not have viewed reading fairy tales as an inappropriate activity for the beach, and she had broadened Bette’s views on appropriateness.

“No, Mama B,” Angelica’s tone indicated that her mother was being silly.

    “But you want the book.”

“For the castles,” she replied as she skipped out of the door and down the hall.  “Hurry, mama.”

Bette smiled as she grabbed the tote and raced after Angelica. She caught up with her daughter at the head of the stairs.

    “Wait a sec, Boo.”

When they reached the foot of the stairs, the little girl pouted as her mother walked into the sitting room.

    “Aunt Grace?”

“It is too late to whisper after the cacophony you two made coming down the stairs.’

    ‘I’m sorry,” Bette replied, contritely.

    “I was awake.”

“Aunt Grace,” Bette reproached.  “Do you still have the beach set?”

“Every generation of you thinks you’re different, but it’s nonsense.  Of course I have the set. Children are all the same at the beach.  The set is where it has always been.”

Bette took a few more steps into the room. She bent down to kiss her aunt on the cheek as she whispered, “You are a wise old curmudgeonly pack rat.”

    1. so what was the ethical lapse? You gonna share? Bette have failings? NEVER!It is too funny that Bette is going crazy for junk food, and Tina needs to stop being her mother. I don’t know why Bette is going junk food crazy but if she is enjoying herself, let her be!I have to say that I am disturbed by Tina’s reaction to seeing Angelica fall into the water. Bette was right there, Angie was fine, and tina totally disrespected Bette by grabbing Angie out of her arms, as though only Tina could take proper care of her. That was very hurtful and Bette should not have let that pass. Bette is not the babysitter, she is Angie’s parent, and needs to be treated as such. I also wonder why any child would require a bag of toys, a kid’s ipod and a portable DVD player everytime she left the house?A good storyteller evokes emotions of all kinds and this one is doing that for me! Write on!!!

    2. Caleigh, youngin’s are brought along different these days. We just got in the car and rode, didn’t we? If we beat on our siblings too bad we just heard the omnipotent threat of “If I have to pull this car over”….

    3. “Bette had never been there so she took direction happily” – Is that the character lapse for this chapter? …Do I get a prize? A fruit ice pop? Thanks for the daytrip!
