Ashes, ashes… Chapter 24
“So,” Ronnie said, leaning back in her chair. “You’ve had potentially life altering conversations with both Bette and Helena this week. And you finished a $250,000 funding proposal.”
“It’s been a busy couple of days,” Tina smiled, taking a sip of hot tea.
“You seem very relaxed. Are you?”
Tina considered for a moment before nodding. “Yeah. I mean, I have a lot to think about. But I’m okay with all of it.”
“It sounds like you’re giving yourself the permission to take the time and space you need to sit with your feelings,” Ronnie observed.
“That’s different for me,” Tina said.
“How so?”
“I didn’t try to make everyone feel better. I didn’t… I didn’t just react and try to smooth things over.”
“And what happened?”
“It was… it ended up being really good,” Tina said.
“You sound surprised,” Ronnie offered.
“I guess I am. Especially about Bette. She and I…” Tina paused, searching for words. “We always struggled with communication. But the other day we were finally able to talk with each other. To be honest about our relationship and what happened.”
“You said before that you were able to be more objective about it,” Ronnie said. “That’s a very astute observation.”
“The time apart ended up being a healing thing for us,” Tina admitted. “I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for everyone, but Bette and I had gotten to the point where we actually couldn’t hear each other any more.”
“And when you two met this week, that had changed?”
“Yes. We both made room to listen. And once that happened, we realized that we were saying a lot of the same things. I felt closer to her than I have in…years.”
“It seems like you got some of the closure you needed with her.”
“I did. It was great to spend time with her. I’ll always love Bette. She’s a remarkable person. She just isn’t the person I want to spend my life with. She was incredible with Angelica. We were good parents. We just weren’t very good partners for each other,” Tina said quietly. “If I hadn’t been pregnant, I don’t know that we would have reunited after we split the first time.”

So they’ve utterly put a fork in it? Forever and ever? You know, with somethings even if you put a stake in its heart, should the stake be removed it can rise again. OK, so maybe vampires aren’t the best analogy, but it’s all I’ve got.
WHAT? Ok..I guess I made some huge assumptions after the last chapters when things went so well for Bette and Tina. I thought they would be getting back together and now she tells Ronnie that they can’t and won’t be getting back together…WHAT? Uh…..
No no no no no… *stomps foot* and walks off in a huff. Wounded… absolutely wounded!
*chuckles* I think a few people missed the plot in the last post. I saw the comments then and thought wait did I read this incorrectly. I guess many want to see this couple together no matter what. But realisticly what happened in this story between them is worse than what happened between them in the show. I have said it already and I’ll say it again. The manner in which you develop these characters is exceptional.
I think that Helena will b good 4 Tina.
ha i like your Helena :P well no big surprise there..they need to move foward and go on with their lives. Post soon.
well, thanks a lot Ilene, you just broke my heart
I am wearing the biggest grin right now! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Thank you ffc. Please post soon!
You are an excellent writer but I am really sad they could somehow get back together. But it your story..I hope the show can somehow bring them together in the end..Post soon even if you are done with this story please write another..Thanks for all the time you take.
Ha….brilliant
It’s amazing to me how so many of us have taken the love of Bette and Tina, and have personalized that relationship, making it our own. So, when Tina tells Ronnie that she doesn’t want to spend her life with Bette, it feels (to me anyway) like any hope I had for a similar relationship is all but gone…and that feeling, like this story is heartbreaking….no matter how great your Helena is. Of course, all these feelings are here because of the incredible gift of your writing. Thank you…I think :)
WHAT!!! they were talking have they lost their god dam minds can’t be together WHAT!!!
Thank you.
I’ll always root for a Bette/Tina finale but the story you presented, it would have rang false if it happened. I loved the journey you took them on and while it may not be my happy ending, it was the right ending.
Obviously, as the author you have a right to end their relationship but I take it as a personal loss; as if I failed. I care so deeply about them and cannot accept them as not a couple. This is very disappointing and heartbreaking. And b/c you write so well, it is even more painful b/c you have a way to evoke such sad feelings.
Although a little sad, this is the proper direction to take your story. A reunification of Bette and Tina would have been unrealistic in this story. You are an exceptional writer, thank you for sharing your story.
Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! but so well done! Pikagirl redux! Thanks!
Loving this! I love your Helena -you’ve captured her so well. Can’t wait for the next chapter.
LOL @ “I would hope that you wouldn’t let me sleep through that, Darling. You know how I hate to miss an epiphany,” Helena said softly.I watched hook recently so whenever anyone mentions epihpanies i think of the lines “i just had an apostrophe” “its an epiphany smee”.. lol… quality humour.. stunning chapter as always :)
A very well done chapter. I loved Helena’s line about hating to miss an epiphany. Oh yes, I heard what Tina said to the therapist and well, this story isn’t over yet, so I’m just going to hang in there and let you tell me how it ends. Great story, thanks.
you have written an amazing story – and I appreciate you developing these characters in a different way. I am a true TiBetteshipper and yet you write so well I finally let myself go with you instead of as Seahurst said projecting all my romantic wishes upon B&T and as you wrote in your story it was their own romantic fantasy that kept them from honesty with one another. If only IC and her group could write as well as you I would even endure the end of T&B on film – on second thought probably not.
What? I’m lost!
juz can’t take it…
I love it :DIn your fic, Tina & Helena belong together :D I love the way your leaning :D YAY!
As your story progressed I resigned myself to the fact that Tina and Bette would not be together in this story and having just read this chapter, you have just confirmed it. Even though I find your story sad it is just beautiful to read. For Tina and Bette to feel whole again and move forward in their lifes they have to take these steps apart, so which ever way you are going to go with them I’m sure it will be written with tenderness. Thank you.
Excellent Chapter. I’m glad I’m reading some stories where they can’t be together. Preparing me for the real end. I even like Helena on the show because U made her Cool in this atory first. Thanks.
I must say that I have mixed emotions about this. I like where you’re heading with this as I like the Helena you’ve created. I also like that it seems both Tina and Bette can finally move forward and not get stuck in their past. However, I’m still a TiBetter at heart. Would there be a chance that Tina will realize in the end that she really does want a life with Bette, no matter how wonderful Helena is? Having said that, I’ll gladly read whatever you have in store for us. Thanks!
