    Bette Forgets 51

“Mr. Dex, thank you for getting in touch with me so promptly.  Sorry about the earliness of my call.”

    Who is Mr. Dex?

“Bette Porter,” Bette speaks into the phone, “I don’t know if we ever talked or anything but”

    She is interrupted.

    “Yes, Tatyana, that’s right.”

This must be the lawyer guy she was telling me she found the number of.  When did she call him?  I see Bette suck in a breath.

“Right,” she speaks closing both of her eyes, “Wait what?”

Her eyes snap open and they widen slightly.  Lochlain takes delight in the face that Bette makes apparently and he giggles.  Bette smiles at him but is still listening intently.

“Did I know this fact,” Bette asks

She is furrowing her brow and bighting on her lip.

    “Rightso where is she now?”

My head whips around at hearing this.  ‘Where is she now?’  What the ***** does that mean.

“I see,” Bette speaks and I can tell by her expression that she didn’t really, “I think we should meet in personyeah I can do that.  Thanks.”

Bette clicks off the phone and sets it on the table.  She pulls Lochlain closer in her arms.  He senses his mommy is upset and just looks up at her in silence.

    “What is it babe?”

    “She didn’t die,” Bette speaks

    “What?”

Bette turns her eyes to me, “She didn’t die.”

    “Ifwhat I don’t understand.”

“They sent her into the witness protection program because she witnessed a horrible crime.”

I scratch the side of my neck, “Witness protection?  Are they supposed to be telling you that?”

She frowns at that, “Seems that the people that she was to testify against were killed and she was released from protection.  I didn’t think they could do that.”

“When was she released,” I ask

    “Last week.”

    “Last week!”

Bette nods her head and smiles at me, “Our lives are full of drama.”

I can’t help but smile in return, “So when is this meeting with the lawyer guy?”

    “Noon,” says Bette

    “Today?”

    Bette nods her head.

    “I have to work.”
