    Bette — Plan B; pt. 52

“Jeri, talk to me, maybe I can help.”

Time to hold it together, Porter, You wanted the mom game, you’ve got it. In spades. I know, you thought it’d be for your own kid, not someone else’s.

    “No one can help me.”

The girl clutched onto me tighter and sobbed louder. As if that were possible.

But at least she’s talking. If I can keep her talking, maybe I can figure out what’s going on. Based on the evil glares I keep getting from the other side of the room, Jess won’t be helping. “Tell me, Jeri, what’s so bad?”

The waiting felt like an eternity, but finally the girl quieted enough to blurt, “my family’s going to kick me out.”

Okay, so this is going to be a simple one.

    Where’s Tina, again?

Might as well get on the next plane back to New York if I did that. And it wouldn’t even be Tina’s decision; it’d be mine.

Let’s see if we can get a little calm in here. This is a friend of Jess’s. “I’m sure your parents love you.” This must be true, or Tina have said something to say about her, right? “Do you really think they’d kick you out?”

    “Maybe.” And more sobs.

This child is going to dehydrate before I get the entire story.

What could I do? I held her, and I rocked her, like Kit used to do for me when I was scared. Like I used to do for Tina during her panic attacks. Like I never gave myself enough chances with Jess. Now’s not the time to dwell on what’s past; now I have to be here for both of these girls. “Tell me what’s going on. Maybe I can help.”

    “I-I-I’m.”

It seemed like it was going to take forever to get this next phrase out.

    “Pu-pu-pu-pregnant.”

Oh my God. Jess? This could be Jess? I think I’m going to be sick.

I so hope that thought doesn’t show on my face.

    “They’ll hate me.”

“No they won’t.” I answered that one on instinct. Better to give a quick response than to not respond, and have her think she’s right.

    1. hey we are all a little MIA these days… but glad your back… love your story… hope all goes well at jeri’s house… and jess should just think about what she heard bette say…please continue

    2. Whatev. with the “?” after tbc…you know we want more of this story. I love how it develops itself almost completely through dialogue and the inner monologue of the characters. I understand the lure of the bon bons, but I don’t want to see you being busted out of your house on springer either you know…Glad you’re posting again, don’t be a stranger.

    3. “It’s love that’s been damaged”. That’s the perfect description. As I have said, I believe that Jess has abandoment issues and although she has only recently realized that abdonment, it doesn’t mean that the love can’t be repaired. I think that Bette made great strides in doing just that by 1) Being sensitive and not pejorative with Jeri and 2) When she told Jess that she was not going ‘with’. All kids want boundries…even Jess. Boundries are created out of love. She might not see that at this particular moment, but hopefully she will. If Bette chooses to stay and ‘fight the good fight’ perhaps both Tina and Jess will see that she won’t bolt at the first sign of being overwhelmed.

Did Jeri ever take a pregnancy test, or two to confirm that she was indeed pregnant? I’m also wondering if Jess will address any of what Bette said with Alice.

Once again, a great chapter with great one-liners from Bette’s inner thoughts.

To be continued? You’d better unless you want us to release the furry creatures on you!
