’I just have one last question, humor me. After you doctors say; there’s nothing I can do. Do you go home at night, feeling the fulfillment of a successful day? Is it just part of your daily routine? Checking your watch while checking off boxes? One patient gone, check. Another one down, check. Is that how it works Doctor Renault?’

The neon light above me flickered. This would be the perfect moment for a voice behind me to interject and reason with me. Enough Bette. But there were just a few other customers, their looks telling they would have something to talk about at home.

He turned around and walked away with his head held high, as if washing his hands in innocence. Certainly he wouldn’t mention any of this to his wife. The encounter was all so insignificant to him, that he would have forgotten about it by the time he swiped his credit card at check out. I saw him take a bouquet of flowers, a cheap, generic one with too much green and little flowers, you can find them at every grocery store, one I would never choose for Tina. And yet the ring on his finger implied that he managed to keep a wife.

    2.2 Bette

The soft glow of vintage chandeliers cast a warm ambiance, illuminating Renee’s living room in a gentle embrace. The walls were dressed in ornate wallpaper, a delicate pattern of muted gold and ivory, exuding a sense of opulence. The carved wooden panels framed the windows. In the corner, a Gramophone stood proudly on a patterned wooden table. Its brass horn shone with a soft patina, and the room was filled with the dulcet tones of soft jazz. Renee and I sat at the large dinning room table, we had just finished dinner and a plate with a selection of french cheeses stood between us.

The front door opened and Tina walked in, her blonde hair was still moist from the shower. I had heard her come home from Nomandy earlier, the wheels of the suitcase had rolled on the wooden floor planks above my head and not much later the shower had started to run. That’s how I had found out my wife had returned home from her business trip.

    1. This is so well written, you can almost touch the pain, the sadness, the guilt, the sorrow but also the love she has for Tina.

I love how you let us read and feel the inner thoughts of both Tina and Bette.

    2. I feel shrunken. Everything is so sad, you write their feelings in such a clear manner it’s almost as if I’m the one going through the heartach

    3. When I saw 2.0, I thought, how could this original be improved or redone, but OMG you capture raw emotion so well. The pain, hurt, longing… love. Most excellent.

    4. Even if I want to slap Bette regularly I so enjoy this story. The change of perspective is perfect to put the puzzle of what happend between the once happy couple together. I hope Bette will get over herself and her anger soon and starts talking to Tina.
