    Breathe– Chapter 16

“Think about walking down Third Avenue, the things you would see, the stores you would pass. Now picture yourself at the school. Can you see yourself there Tina?” Bette asked quietly.

Tina nodded without saying a word. “Why did you go home?” Bette asked finally when she saw Tina’s shoulders drop in complete relaxation.

“I don’t know. I think maybe I wasn’t feeling well. I started to feel lightheaded. So I,” she paused as she tried to pull the memory from its hiding place. She shook her head but still kept her eyes tightly shut “I don’t remember Bette. I don’t know how I got from the school to my apartment. I don’t even know where my car is.”

“That’s fine Tina,” Bette continued, still keeping her voice low and even and using Tina’s name as often as possible to keep her rooted in the here an now.

“How about when you got to your apartment, before you went in?” Bette asked quietly.

Bette could see Tina’s eyes moving rapidly under her lids as she tried to see her movements that day. Frustrated, she sighed and opening her eyes looked directly at Bette.

“I can’t do this,” she said softly. “I don’t remember.” Bette stroked her hand gently and said “T, close your eyes again. Let’s work through it together.”

Tina let her head fall back slowly, and as she drew in a deep breath closed her eyes again.

“You’re in front of your apartment building, what are you doing?” After a long pause Tina said quietly “I’m on the steps because my knees are weak, I need to sit down.”

Still stroking Tina’s hand, Bette asked “How long did you sit there?”

Tina shook her head still not opening her eyes. “I don’t know, but I’m so tired. I have never felt this tired.”

Bette nodded. “What finally made you get up Tina?” she asked, her voice still soft and reassuring.

Tina furrowed her brow and moved her head side to side as if trying see something. “There’s someone, a man, and he’s coming down the stairs really fast. He pushed the door so hard that I’m afraid it’s going to hit me.”

Bette has to use every ounce of control to keep her voice calm. “Can you see him Tina? Try and look at his face. Do you know him?”

Tina shook her head again. “No I don’t know him, but he looks kind of familiar, like I’ve seen him before.”

Bette decides to take a risk and lead Tina a little more than she should.

“Think back to the coffee shop this morning. I don’t think you had ingested the drug yet, so that should be a clear memory for you. Does anyone in the coffee shop look familiar, like you’ve seen him before?” Bette used Tina’s exact words to help her associate the two memories, one clear and untainted and one undermined by a date-rape drug.

Eyes still closed, Tina tilts her head as she is looking around the caf in her memory. “Wait, there he is,” she says, surprised to see his face in this memory as well.

Bette could hardly maintain her composure as she realized Tina may have crossed paths with and looked directly into the face of the man planning to end her life.

“What’s he doing Tina? Tina barely lifted her hand as if she’s accepting something being offered to her. “He’s giving me my coffee.”

Bette took in a sharp breath as a sense of deep relief spread over her. Every criminal makes a mistake that ultimately leads to their undoing. He had killed every woman that had seen his face but by killing Tina’s roommate and leaving her alive, Bette’s monster had just made his.

Bette leaned back and let the amazing truth sink in. “My God, she saw him,” she thought to herself. “Tina saw him.”

Bette’s relief was short lived as darker thoughts clouded her mind. “My God, she saw him,” Bette repeated to herself more slowly, the words now taking on a completely different meaning.

She looked at Tina sitting across from her, eyes closed, trusting Bette to keep her safe and she realized that for the second time in her life, Bette was afraid for the woman she loved.

    Comments

    1. I totally got that Bette had no intentions of agreeing to move Tina out. She knows how much Tina needs her right now so it didn’t surprise me that Bette didn’t acknowledge that part of the statement. Another excellent chapter.

    2. Sox thanks again for another page turner. I still can’t get enough. Yes I got your meaning about where Tina would go and it’s funny but in my head I did ghave Bette telling her captain that it was none of his damn business. Thanks for the vivid pictures you draw as you put this together.

    3. I got the “You have my word I’ll do my job,” comment. And I thought it was great that you let Bette’s decision unspoken. smooth.
This chapter was great, I felt like I was there with them, and I got the same feeling of satisfaction when Bette learned that Tina had seen him, and then the same feeling of dread.
      Well done, as usual.
      xxx

    4. SOX I too understood what you implied at the end of the last chapter.
You’re a really good writer! Whenever I see your post my heart races…I get kinda anxious!

    5. Sox, i too so got it about her doing her job and not moving Tina out – it was pretty clear. I know i’ve said this before, but i LOVE this story. When i get home from work – the first thing i do is check to see if you’ve posted and much to my relief you have … looking forward to the next installment.

    6. Sox,
Was that a little ole complement for me? Why thank you kindly. I just write it as I see it.
Yet again I am blown away with your skillful and dexterous plotting and pacing.
You are a true artist with a monitor and keyboard in place of a canvas and brushes. Words are your paints as every sentence is a brush stroke; giving away fine details and nuances that build up the layers that become the whole picture. This make your story a true work of genius.
It has some many levels that demand the reader attention. It never succumbs to the easy option but maintains intelligent reasoning and rationale.
I know that this is a state of mind so am not surprised that you deal with everything in your life in this way.
The magical mystery has me wanting more every time I read another chapter,
Please post when ever you can and know that I will be watching for it. You make my day richer with such articulate and intellectual prose.
      Thank you.
      Your Loyal Fan.
PS – Yes, I am known to be sesquipedalian.

    7. Wow I love this dtory you are and excellent writer.. I was on the edge of my seat readig… I hope Bette can and WILL keep Tina safe.. Post soon.. Can’t wait for the next chapter…

    8. im sneaking reading this at work. i dont really have any words for this. im truly sitting here holding my breath as she takes tina on this journey. so happy that bette is doing what she knows is right, little touches for tina. makes your heart melt. awesome.

    9. This is a really fabulous story, I can’t get enough! Keep them coming, and don’t worry about long chapters….with a story like this the longer the better!

    10. Great update. You’ve gotten me so hooked on this. Hopefully Bette will use her head when it comes to protecting Tina and not her heart, they could both get hurt. So looking forward to your next update.

    11. Another great chapter. I wonder; when will Tina realise that the guy at the boat is the bad guy? The interaction between Bette and Tina in the interview is excellent. Tina showed her strength when refusing to speak to Oliver & Hardy – she’ll be good for Bette. Being a cop changes people it takes them away from everyone who isn’t another cop. Being a homicide cop is a thousand times worse and they don’t even know they are getting damaged until they wake up one morning realising they have protected themselves at the expense of their own humanity. Bette has had nobody while she has been a cop, Tina is her salvation.

    12. Fucking awesome!!!
I’m glad you are addicted just as much as I am. I crave your story.
Tina saw him twice so she will have a good description to give, and maybe the coffe shop has cameras.

    13. Sox, I can’t get enough of this story! It’s the first thing that I look for when I log on each day. Your writing is truly impressive and full promise. I can picture everything that I am reading. Thank you for your long chapters and your rapid posts! Can’t wait for the next one

    14. i SOOOOOO LOVE this story..It is absolutely FABULOUS….Bette knows she is in danger…I am waiting patiently for your next CHAPTER…PLEASE LET IT BE SOON…..

    15. Bette did the job she had to do and protected tina you go MISS PORTER!!!!!!!! great post I am so glad your not sleeping because i get a new post when you don’t sleep. Stay up all night tonight lol!!!!!

    16. What a compelling story, so intense and so real…

I was also closing my eyes in a way, reading this powerful slow-race chapter as if lines were printed on a screen with a motion picture behind.
I could truly SEE this interview room as if I was sit at this table, and FEEL all the inward emotions so beautifully expressed in every little details here.
The way the killer’s face slowly came back in Tina’s blured memory made me think about this famous scene in Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man, when one see the true killer walking superimposed on Henry Fonda’s face until his own face became a close-up and fully superimposed Fonda’s one.
You created the same mentally visual processus here, as well as a great work of slow discoveries for both Bette and us all along this amazing chapter.

What a joy to read such quality writing !! Have I already say how talented you are ?? Anyway, I say it again – and always from the most sincere bottom of my heart.
      Thank you so much !!

    17. Sox – you are a creative goddess – each scene with dialogue and description is so vivid and alive. I feel as if I am there. Thank you for sharing this with us and for posting so quickly. If IC had a brain in her head and reads this stuff she would hire you on the spot. You go girl – I’m with you 100%. ~bfan

    18. You…YOU need a 12-step program? I’m right there with you. Hell, I’m working from home this week. Yeah, that has consisted of continually refreshing the fanfic site in hopes of seeing another chapter. I’m jonesing like you wouldn’t believe.

Tell your hubby I’m on my way to Seattle if that’s what it’s going to take to get these wonderful chapters cranked out! Just remind him…he can look, but no touching. I do have a reputation to protect (such as it is).

Now for the real stuff. Each time I read one of your chapters the world falls away and everything else ceases to exist but your page on my computer screen. The quiet way that you lead us through such a difficult experience fraught with such emotion is magnificant. Even though this is a subject and profession that I have no personal knowledge about, I never feel that I don’t understand. If anything, it makes me thirst to learn more.

Both of these woman have been adrift for too long without an anchor. They are each other’s safe harbor. While each has her own strengths, they are bringing out and building new ones that will help each of them as they move forward…together.

*whispering to someone that passes by…”hey, gotta new Sox1 story? I’ll trade you my cat for it”* Yeah, I’ve got it bad.

    19. I think they should just go ahead and violate the hell out of that attorney/detective client privilege thing, or whatever keeps them from engaging in improprietous behaviour.

Have at it girls, before the killer eliminates your chances.
      ****************************************
Sox, this is Technequa – Pleae don’t make this one of them stories where the girl dies in the hero’s arms before he can save her (Chinatown, Blowout).
I hate it when it’s like that.

Okay, do what you like. I just hope they can steal away for a minute and do the wild thang, one good time.

      Thank you.

      ************************************

      Now, back to the story…

    20. Hey Sox1! Ditto to everyone’s comments…I know what you mean about sleep—I haven’t been to bed since 3 a.m. in months due to my addiction to reading FF! Thanks for sacraficing for us–keep up the amazing work. You have a gift! (P.S. I hope sox 1 doesn’t mean Boston—I’m a huge Yankee fan—at any rate, I won’t hold it against you because I LOVE LOVE LOVE reading your story.

    21. This is going to get scary – that guy will come back for and now Bette too. I love the way you write all the tender connections between them. But I have a feeling Tina is stronger than we think.
(I use to plan special events for 18 years so I understand..)

    22. keep tina and bette safe… maybe bette can get tina to remember waht this bastard looks like… love your story… oh and the dog… please keep him with tina at all times…

maybe tina will remember that bastard was in the boat the day before

    23. Want to comment so you keep going but don’t know what to add to all your accolades.

This story is really good. I’m not a mystery genre lover, but I love Bette and Tina and this tale. Hats off to you–this is well written.

    24. Does anyone else get “in trouble” like I do for coming home and going straight to the computer to catch up on this saga? This by far my favorite story in fan fiction.
Sox1 you are an awesome author and the rest of us wait on the edge of our seats for your next post. Sorry you’re missing out on sleep. I appreciate it and miss out on mine to read your story.

    25. Sox, not sure that I can say anything that hasn’t already been said. Your talent is much appreciated. A simple Thank You will have to do as I have no other words. Superb!

    26. that was a great chapter….uh oh bette…tina saw the guy…she might need saving and it’s time her shining cop in power suits comes to save her
