Broken Girls with Strange Frames (Ch. 30)

Chapter 30: First Her, Then Me

The cornerstore was empty and Bobby was reading a comic book while I examined the expiration dates on all the chips. There’s always some bad ones, you know. I didn’t have anything worthwhile to do all day except eat dinner at Bette’s, and hanging out with Bobby was relaxing because he didn’t talk much.

“You won’t find any,” he said quietly.

“If I could reach the ones in the back,” I said, “I bet they’re all stale.”

“Where are Spencer and Kyle today?”

I wandered around the store, poking at things. “Watching paint peel.”

He raised an eyebrow. “I suppose that’s better than watching it dry.”

“No, really,” I said, laughing. “They’re helping a friend of Spencer’s paint his bedroom, but first they’re going to scrape the paint off the wall and then do some-I don’t know-the guy’s a sculptor, he’s gonna do some weird ***** with it.”

    “Artists are weird,” Bobby agreed.

    “Yeah.”

He tossed the comic aside, taking a seat behind the counter. I watched him fiddle with the cash register. “What did you want to talk about?”

    “I was just buying soda.”

He considered this. “You bought it. And drank it. So what’s up?”

“Nothing.” I leaned against the counter. Bobby nodded. He wasn’t going to drag it out of me, which made me want to talk about it even more. “Do you think… would it have been better if Kyle had told Spencer how he felt a long time ago?”

    “Better,” he stated.

    “Yeah.”

“They’re happy now. What would be better?”

“If they could’ve been happy like, three years ago. Or something.”

He shrugged. “But they’re happy now.”

“Yeah, but-” I wasn’t explaining it properly. He gave me a moment to sort it out in my head, which I was grateful for. I said carefully, “Unhappiness is… I mean, say a person was unhappy for like, ten years. And then all of a sudden everything starts going right. You know, like, they get promoted at their job, they get married, they have kids-I mean, everything’s just going perfect. They’re really happy.”

    “Okay,” Bobby said.

    1. Rachel,
Your friend recognised alittle gem and suggested that you share it with more people and i am glad that you listened to her. A wonderful, humorous, intelligently witful story. Not only that, you have posted it frequently enough for the flow of the story to be maintained.
Thank you and hope you continue writing and sharing your next bit of gem with us.

    2. I do hope your muse strikes again for a continuation of Al’s story. How the gang met up, her continuation of getting over Bette and being happy. I understand for the sake of reality, that it couldn’t happen quickly in this story, but if you do write more, can Al have found a little peace? The way you have written puts me so in touch with the character, ya kind of just want to see her happy (plus who hasn’t been there??) This was an amazing story and you are truly gifted.

    3. This was one of my all time fanfic stories. I really do hope that you write some more. You are totally Alice and I love the way you write her and Bette with all of their raw emotions. Thanks so much for making me laugh.

    4. That was a great ending (which is usually hardest to achieve in fanfic) to a great fic. You have constantly amazed with the depth and consistency of your characterisation. The wonderful writing is funny and heartbreaking, often at the same time which is a neat trick. I loved this story from start to finish. One of the best I’ve read in any fandom.

    5. Oh, Alice. First her. Then me…. Wow. It may not be an I-found-my-soulmate kind of love, but it IS still a love that’s worth keeping. If Bette can’t love Alice like the way she loves Tina, she should definitely cherish her just as much. I feel for you, Alice. Oh, Alice, Alice, Alice.

Rachel_raj, I hope this isn’t the last of your writing. You are one of the few that I like here and it’d be a shame if you stop. Please keep on writing.

      Cheers!

    6. That was the purest portrayal of Alice that I have read. I felt that I could see her doing everything she did and hear her ramblings as if sitting at The Planet with her.

From beginning to end, it was witty, insightful and bittersweet. A very candid look into what happens when there is unrequited love.

You have made me feel like I understand what could have transpired between Bette and Alice to make their friendship what it is on the show. You gave a back story to Bette that we have not seen. A gem of a story. Thank you, hope you write something else.

    7. i really liked your story, what a great and different point of view!!your a gifted writer, can’t wait for your next story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    8. Well. It’s definitely a LIGHTER ending than the one I first read. I realized you don’t write straight up happy endings, do you? The best you can muster is bittersweet, I think. Hah.

“First her. Then me, I guess, someday.”
^ That? That kills me. I loved this. I love Bette and I love Alice. I love most how much this story moves like it’s more than a prequel. Because you apply these experiences to Bette and Alice as they are now and it makes sense. It’s still relevant. Dude, just finish the sequel, I’ll pay you.

    9. I really, really, really like asparagus! My favorite vegetable. Just like this story is my favorite in its genre. How, how, how, do you get in Alice’s head like that? I’m stupefied! Give more of your amazing talent! Your gift transcends reality!

    10. This is the first Alice fic that has held my interest from beginning to end. You literary skill made her a very compelling heroine.

Thank you for giving Alice a voice that told a story among the best that has ever graced this site.

I commend you for this wonderful performance!

    11. What an amazing talent you have! Thanks for sharing it–this story was nothing short of perfect in every way! Hope you continue writing for a while…and soon!

    12. This story is truly one of the most well written…most entertaining stories on this site. You talked about how hard it is when you have had someone in your head for so long…well, let me just say that your sense of humor, your wit, your grasp on human emotions…all mixed in with your writing skills…put me right inside of Alice’s head. You really, truly pulled that off, chapter after chapter. Honestly, I think you captured Alice’s voice better than anyone. Really well done…and I hope you do treat us with a sequel, or any new story, for that matter. Thank you for this wonderful ride.

    13. I’ven been busy wih school work and come back to a wonderful surprise. This fiction was truely one of the best I have ever read. You characterize everyone perfectly and really give insight on each person. It’s like the building blocks of the characters we know and love. Simply brillant 5 stars were never more deserved.

    14. Yay, I’m back, I just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful story.
I think this is one of the most interesting stories I’ve ever been given to read.
I loved the way you portrayed each of the characters, how you gave life to Spencer and Kyle, it was truly brilliant to feel like they had their place in the story.
I loved the discussion between Bobbie and Alice, it was nice to see how a non-important character could help Alice understand what was going on between her and Bette.
I loved how you toyed between sadness and humour too, sometimes I didn’t know if I had to cry or laugh about Alice’s issues, it was kind of intense :)
Anyway, thanks for this story, I hope an as-good-as-this-one sequel is coming real soon.
