Broken Girls with Strange Frames (Ch. 8)
Chapter 8: A Retrospective Illusion
“I wonder,” said Bette as she finished her coffee, “if us living together was a good thing or bad thing in the long run.”
I shrugged. “It wasn’t a good thing.”
“And you working for me was pretty bad.”
“Whatever.” I leaned back in my chair. “I’m a writer, not a gofer.”
“I think you were just happy to be out of that apartment with Spencer and Kyle. Especially Spencer. I know I’m a control-freak sometimes, but he’s ridiculous.”
I laughed. Because she said “sometimes” instead of “all the ***** time”.
“Well, Spencer,” I told her, “is definitely looking forward to the opening at the gallery.”
“Good,” Bette said moodily. “That makes one of us.”
“You’re not excited?” I mean, you’d hope that something she devoted 25 hours a day to, eight days a week… I mean, you’d hope that it would at least make her excited.
“I could be excited, I’m sure, if certain artists returned phone calls in a timely matter. I’m not going to name names, but Catherine Opie is giving me a ***** headache and I’m pretty sure she thinks that we have all the time in the world before the opening and, oh, if I don’t have everything finished in time, I can just magically stop time and get everything done.”
It occurred to me that Catherine Opie probably didn’t really think that, because it sounded like one of those strange theories Bette was always coming up with that didn’t make sense to anyone else. So I just smiled and nodded, which is one of the best things to do when Bette’s angry, upset, exhausted, or worried. And with the new exhibit opening at the gallery only two months away, she was all of the above.
“Well, you should be excited,” Bette said after she’d ridden out her mood and seemed to be feeling better. “I mean, you’re going to be a star.”
“Oh, please, can you not say that?”
“You are!”
“Stop! The only reason I even agreed to it is because you said that most people just care about the composition of the piece, not the subject.”
“Oh, well, that.” Bette waved her hand around and drained the rest of her coffee. “I was lying to get you to say yes.”

eeeeeeexcellent (mr burns voice) …how long is your entire story anyway? I’m loving the frequent posts, the only other story I read on a regular basis is updated once a WEEK! (dont get any ideas)
Love the quick posts too. This story , and the telling of it, are “all kinds of awesome”. Alice narrating an episode of the show could be hilarious – that’s if any of the TLW writers could remember that she actually used to be funny!
ok rachel i read ur whole collection and i must say this is an excellent story!! the humor haha makes me smile!! neways love ur writing continue sooon plz
spam away and leave the guilt behind… a crisp fiver says we can read faster than you can post. Bring on General Porter …
Spam? What spam? This is entertainment.
OMG are you sure your not Alice P from an alternate dimension where Alice P really exists, who has gained access to this universe and thought it would be cool to tell her story cause you have her down cold……
This will never be classified as spam, if so it’s the first time I’d be happy for it. I can just imagine Bette holding that pen! I am out of words to describe this story other than awesome. Keep up the good work.
it’s amazing how on point you’ve written bette and alice. looking forward to the next chapter.
I have a thought, and it might be crazy: this died-in-the-wool Tibetter is not ready for Tina to enter the story yet. Go figure!
The Catherine Opie show is two months away – TDay, TDay!!! I’m loving this Alice and Bette story so much I don’t want to advance to the day they inevitably meet. Please, put Tina back in the closet! I love this story. It’s so unique, well-written, better than fine!
“nd when I tried to take a break halfway through and see what she was up to, she was hunched over a ridiculous stack of papers with her glasses on and greeted me with, “I thought you were working.”
I had this instant image of Ebenezer Scrooge browbeating Bob Crachit as hunches over his desk, trying to get heat from that lonely candlestick and the one coal ember dying in the stove across the room.
Poor Alice. Never f**k your friends. Never work for them, either.
Ha!
Alice and Bette…the lesbian Odd Couple! I loved the simultaneous conversations and interactions. Delightful as usual.
