Then I stop shouting and my tone becomes lighter.  ”Look, we’re not talking about just any ”Crazy Joe” sitting on a park bench talking to invisible pigeons.  Delusions, ideas of impossible grandiosity, lying as second nature…these are symptoms, no Goddammit, they are proof that he’s mentally deranged.”

A quick exchange of  glances with the man sitting next to her on the couch.

I lean forward to focus their attention back on me.  ”My last point as it pertains to his delusions.  Have you heard any strange and grandiose ideas about building a two thousand mile long border wall?”

None of the agents will look me in the eyes.  They stare everywhere but at me.

”Please just bring him over to where I work, or I’ll meet you at Walter Reed and take some blood samples, do a CT scan and run him through the MRI.”

”That’s just not going to happen today.”  She stands up, as my signal I can leave.

Did I sense a feeling of regret in her voice?

”You know, Agent 4, reality should not have to grasped at, as if it were a balloon floating away from you.”  I knock the side of my head to make my point.  ”Reality should already be firmly in here by the age of three.”

Even though I saw him earlier, I drive back to the barn to see Nightingale.  I really don’t want to talk to anymore humans today, in fact, the thought of a human voice feels like shattered glass cutting into my skin.  I need the smell and nustling of my horse.

I slip his halter over his nose and fasten it behind his ears and with a lead rope I guide him out of his stall and down the centerline of the stable.  He blows out a long exhale and makes significant snorts, as one by one the other horses in the barn extend their heads and necks out over their stall doors and snort back as we pass.

Nightingale and I clop along the frost covered path that encircles the riding ring.  It’s dark, nearly 7pm, and there’s not another human soul in sight. I may walk in circles with no destination for hours just followed by my horse. I have serious thinking to do, but no wish to concentrate on any of it.

    1. Very kind of you to say! I’m very pleased with the story. Once I tried writing Bette using the third person narrator and the muse refused. She’s either in my ear on headphones, or there’s silence. I do, however, get to pick the pictures.

    2. Command, i am glad that you get to pick the pictures, they are absolutely stunning. Esspecially the picture from Nightingale. I admire horses for their strenght, beauty and kind heart.

The way you write Bette is very interesting and i love it!

One question, the picture from the woman , do you know the real name of her? She seems familiar, but it isn’t Laurel Holleman?

Thank you for the incredible chapter!

      • The actress Julianne Moore is the TV pundit in this story. Pleased that you enjoy the pictures, so delighted you found the chapter incredible. I’m pleased with it and it was very fun to write!

    3. Hi, Command:

Nice story and nice characterization of Bette Porter, but you left us in the middle of “something”, and in an odd place with someone, I would never guess, isn’t it Julianne Moore? Well anyway, I like your story and I’ll wait for your update. Thanks

      P

      • Yes, Bette showed us emotional range in that last chapter, from confidence to vulnerability… and more. In writing its conclusion I’d felt to extend that last scene with conversation between the two lovers would have taken the energy I’d built and brought it too quickly back to reality. To me, I like that we’re still imagining them in Room 303 at the Tabard Inn. In story time, it’s still the middle of the night so, anything is possible.

    4. Loved the chapter and Julianne Moore is a beautiful woman and wonderful actress but, she is no Laurel Holloman. Bette should always be in the arms of Tina Kennard. Will we ever see Tina for Bette, really hope so. Ir would have been wonderful for America and the world if something like this had really happened and none of us would have to be living with what we are in the Presidency. Really enjoy your writing. Thanks for posting.

    5. Let’s get Bette involved in the journalistic world of behind the scenes sources first. She’ll be furious, once Trump gets elected, and I imagine her focus will be directed toward women’s rights, science and technology fund cutting measures, climate denying Cabinet members and reams of their environmental rollbacks and replacement bills. All of this will upset her.

I’d love for Bette to meet Tina at the Women’s March. In story time that march is six days away.

Maria, the TV pundit and journalist, is a wonderful character and companion for Bette – to knock Bette back into the game-on mood for sexual dalliances.

Tina, as a heartful, but nonetheless crafty head of an NGO will be needed, as the story of Docter Porter’s deepening involvement — in what she views as a “nightmare presidency” unfolds.

I hope we all will learn from the backroom intel, she and others will be gathering. Cool themes about medical science, (you know she’ll be hot-headed on the threats of cutbacks to research, the environment and women’s issues.)

This narrative setting of Washington under crisis is target rich for storytelling.

If you can, please enjoy Julianne Moore as a juicy lover for Doctor Porter’s enjoyment at the moment, and let’s what happens…

      I truly appreciate your comment.

    6. Let’s get Bette involved in the journalistic world of behind the scenes sources first. She’ll be furious once Trump gets elected and I imagine her fury directed toward women’s rights, science and technology fund cutting measure and, of course, climate denying Cabinet members and reams of devastating environmental rollbacks and replacement bills that appear to insane. I’d love for Bette to meet Tina at the Women’s March. In story time that march is six days away.
