C O U N T D O W N: Missing Hours

”I recognize you, which makes me wonder do I have the right room?” Saying this, I reluctantly lift my eyes to look into hers, that crinkle at their sides as she steps backwards and ushers me through the door.
In the rear of the room I spot the woman intelligence officer, who’s quickly gathering her keys and phone off the top of a table and brushing past me she whispers, ”I thought you two should meet.”
And then, she’s gone like a puff of smoke and the door clicks closed behind her.
”May I offer you a drink?” Asks the TV pundit. ”My name’s Maria and you are, of course, Doctor Porter.”
I practically dive at the bar while insisting that she call me, Bette.
”Did you come from fox hunting or something?” She illustrates with a sweep of her hand over my riding clothes. ”Nice boots.”
”You don’t hunt foxes at night on horseback.” I swallow an inch of Scotch in one gulp. ”May I fix you something?”
”What you’re having is fine.”
I turn back to the bar and catch my reflection in a mirror. My hair seems to be having an electrical reaction to meeting her and has taken upon itself to curl even wilder. I run my hands through it in a vain attempt to look normal, and then pick up our drinks to join her.
”I’ve seen you on television, many times. You’re smart and so amusing.”
”I looked you up on the internet.”
I lean back in my chair trying my best to look relaxed. ”That must’ve been dull going.”
She laughs and says, ”No, not at all, but I’ll admit to not understanding much in a recent speech of yours.”
I look puzzled.
”I watched the talk you gave in San Francisco on YouTube.” She opens a reporter’s notebook I hadn’t noticed before, and flipping through a few pages she stops and reads, ”Moyamoya Disease Explored Through RNF213.”
”Yes, that would be a confusing topic. Please don’t ask me to explain it to you. I’ve had quite a day.”
”So I’ve heard.” She sips her Scotch and smiles at me.
”Are you married?” I hear myself asking without meaning to. Good Lord! Where is my filter?
She looks puzzled but quickly answers, ”No, are you?” Her answer ends with a delightfully lilting laugh.

You write Bette so well. What a great chapter and very hot! Thanks for posting so soon!
Very kind of you to say! I’m very pleased with the story. Once I tried writing Bette using the third person narrator and the muse refused. She’s either in my ear on headphones, or there’s silence. I do, however, get to pick the pictures.
Command, i am glad that you get to pick the pictures, they are absolutely stunning. Esspecially the picture from Nightingale. I admire horses for their strenght, beauty and kind heart.
The way you write Bette is very interesting and i love it!
One question, the picture from the woman , do you know the real name of her? She seems familiar, but it isn’t Laurel Holleman?
Thank you for the incredible chapter!
The actress Julianne Moore is the TV pundit in this story. Pleased that you enjoy the pictures, so delighted you found the chapter incredible. I’m pleased with it and it was very fun to write!
Hi, Command:
Nice story and nice characterization of Bette Porter, but you left us in the middle of “something”, and in an odd place with someone, I would never guess, isn’t it Julianne Moore? Well anyway, I like your story and I’ll wait for your update. Thanks
P
Yes, Bette showed us emotional range in that last chapter, from confidence to vulnerability… and more. In writing its conclusion I’d felt to extend that last scene with conversation between the two lovers would have taken the energy I’d built and brought it too quickly back to reality. To me, I like that we’re still imagining them in Room 303 at the Tabard Inn. In story time, it’s still the middle of the night so, anything is possible.
Loved the chapter and Julianne Moore is a beautiful woman and wonderful actress but, she is no Laurel Holloman. Bette should always be in the arms of Tina Kennard. Will we ever see Tina for Bette, really hope so. Ir would have been wonderful for America and the world if something like this had really happened and none of us would have to be living with what we are in the Presidency. Really enjoy your writing. Thanks for posting.
Let’s get Bette involved in the journalistic world of behind the scenes sources first. She’ll be furious, once Trump gets elected, and I imagine her focus will be directed toward women’s rights, science and technology fund cutting measures, climate denying Cabinet members and reams of their environmental rollbacks and replacement bills. All of this will upset her.
I’d love for Bette to meet Tina at the Women’s March. In story time that march is six days away.
Maria, the TV pundit and journalist, is a wonderful character and companion for Bette – to knock Bette back into the game-on mood for sexual dalliances.
Tina, as a heartful, but nonetheless crafty head of an NGO will be needed, as the story of Docter Porter’s deepening involvement — in what she views as a “nightmare presidency” unfolds.
I hope we all will learn from the backroom intel, she and others will be gathering. Cool themes about medical science, (you know she’ll be hot-headed on the threats of cutbacks to research, the environment and women’s issues.)
This narrative setting of Washington under crisis is target rich for storytelling.
If you can, please enjoy Julianne Moore as a juicy lover for Doctor Porter’s enjoyment at the moment, and let’s what happens…
I truly appreciate your comment.
