Jane: “hey Bette, you didn’t show up on Saturday’s party at the student’s activity center, where were you”

Bette: “Sorry, I was in the lab”

Alice: “you are a failure Bette; you promised to do the dirty dance”

Frankie raises her eyebrow, looks down the table and listen to the conversation.

Bette: “Okay I promise I’ll do it the next time”

Helena: “Bette, it won’t be next time until end of this term and by then we will be carrying with the newbies”

Bette: “Ugh, I hate pretentious children; well maybe we could have a private party”

Alice: “Come on Bette, what is the point, we want to win the dance contest”

Frankie: “Alice, let her alone”

Bette has been stressed for the last five years after her mother passed during that accident in the restricted zone of LA when Bette had twelve.

Bette’s mother, Maxine, was Bette’s adoration, she love both, Melvin, her father, and Maxine; but Maxine was not only her mother, she was her friend, confident, listener, when Bette at eleven, for the first time, fall in love and the girl turned her down, Maxine was comfort, understanding, and happiness for her sadness, when Bette broke some boy’s nose for kissing the same girl and her teacher call her parents, Maxine was there to fix the situation and later to soothe, console and forgive her. Bette did everything to please her mother and she wanted to be like her, and for her, she loves science because science was her mother’s passion and vocation.

Maxine was a chemical biology engineer at New CalTech, very close to Kristen Kennard and Louise Rossi; when Maxine died, Bette felt half of herself gone with her mother. Her father could do almost nothing for her, he couldn’t even cope with his own grief, if it wasn’t for Louise Rossi and Kit, Bette’s sister, she would keep falling into the abyss of her sadness and solitude.

After Maxine death, Melvin didn’t want Bette to follow her mother’s steps, indeed; Melvin hated New CalTech, detested science because he felt that they stole the love of his life.

Alice: “You know Bette I think you need some sex”
