“What is it?”

“I’d like you to teach an art class at the camp this summer and no excuses. I know you’re not touring.”

“I’m not touring but it’s because I have Chris with me all summer. I’m sorry Bette I can’t be away from him.”

“I wouldn’t ask you to Marcus. You can bring Chris. He’ll have a blast at the camp and he can participate in all the art programs. You told me how much he’s enjoying painting and maybe we can develop some of that raw talent.”

“You know; I hadn’t thought of that. He’d absolutely love California and it sure beats staying in the city all summer. When do you need me there?” Bette thought she’d need to do more convincing but she was thrilled that he agreed.

“In two weeks. I want you there for the dinner where we present the scholarship winners. Michael can take care of the flight arrangements and you and Chris can stay at my house. The camp is a two-hour drive from Los Angeles. We’ve arranged a chartered van to take the six kids from the center, Francesca, Shane, Leigh and I. You and Chris can join us or if you prefer we’ll get you a rental car.”

“No let’s do the bus. This way Chris can interact and get to know some of the kids before we get there. He makes friends very easily but he’s a bit shy at first.”

“Excellent. You’ll be in one of the guest cottages but I think it would be good for Chris to bunk with the other kids if you’re OK with that.”

“Sure. I’m not one of those over protective dads. I believe in letting a kid be a kid. Besides I may not want him hanging around all the time. You did say Francesca was going to be there right?”

Bette could tell by that wide grin that Marcus may have a little crush too. “Yes I did mention that. Any reason?”

“No. I just enjoyed spending time with her when I visited the center. I think she’s nice. Maybe we can hang out.”

“Yeah I’m sure we’ll have some adult activities. We’re taking the kids up just before the 4th of July. We have a day of fun and games planned and in the evening they get to watch a wonderful fireworks display.”
