    Chapter 3 – Angelica

Tina was well into her 8th month now and everything was going great with the baby’s development.
Considering Tina’s history Dr. Wilson was monitoring her closely and taking every precaution to avoid any unforeseeable complications. Due to the baby’s size and some other medical issues it was determined that Tina would need to undergo a C-Section instead of natural child birth. The delivery date was scheduled for the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

Tina had always imagined that it would be Bette Porter holding her hands in the delivery room as she gave birth to their child but instead it would be Helena Peabody. Helena had been a source of strength and support to Tina over the past several months. She’d taken on extra duties at work to give Tina the time off that she needed. She’d accompanied Tina to the doctor visits. She’d helped her to set up the nursery. She’d been her constant companion and confidant.

Helena too was single as her marriage had broken up under similar circumstances when she cheated on her partner Winnie Mann. She knew the ramifications and what Bette lost as a result. She herself had lost her partner and custody of their two children but at least she had visitation rights. Unfortunately the children and their other mother lived in New York so the visits were infrequent.
Tina was grateful to have her close friend to go through the pregnancy with. She’d found that Helena had a special affinity for pregnant women. Since Winnie had given birth to one of their children Helena had an idea of what Tina was experiencing. Tina loved Helena. She appreciated all that Helena was doing so that she wouldn’t feel so alone but it couldn’t replace what Tina had hoped to share with Bette when they’d planned to start a family.

Tina and Bette had conceived of the baby together out of their love. They had chosen Marcus Allenwood, an African American donor so that the child would be more like their child. When Bette and Tina talked about using an African American donor Tina expressed some fears that she wasn’t
prepared or qualified to be the mother of a child that was half African American but Bette had assured her that the only preparation she needed was a commitment to spending the rest of her life with Bette. Together they would deal with any challenges their child might encounter because of his/her heritage and who the parents were.
