Chapter 3 – Tina and Carrie

Carrie:  Tina, she’s young.  She’ll come around once we here in Los Angeles and we start making plans for the wedding.  We just need to spend some time with her and show her how happy we are.

Tina made a face which looked of absolute surprise by Carrie’s response.

Tina:  Carrie, right now my daughter feels that in leaving and divorcing Bette, that was a rejection of her and her mother as a family. She sees my impending marriage to you as a replacement of them as my family. She sees the mother she had all of her life up until three years ago drifting further away to pursue her own happiness leaving her with the scraps of time I have left.  How the fuck do you think she could possibly be happy about that? She sees this as further separation between Angie and me. Yeah, she’s a strong kid and she is a lot like Bette. She will wish me well and put on the best happy face she can, but when she is alone, she will grieve over this as a loss of the mother she once had. And deep in her heart, she believes that she will never have that relationship again with me for I have chosen you instead!

Tina paused for a few minutes.  Carrie had downed her drink when a knock on the door came. The bellman wheeled in the cart and placed the food on the coffee table as directed by Carrie. Carrie tipped the bellman and escorted him to the door and then went and prepared another drink for the two of them.  Tina grabbed a sandwich and proceeded to consume it.

Carrie:  Tina, I know that Angie is your daughter, and she is very important to you. And I know you love her very much. I also know that when parents’ divorce, the relationship of with children especially with the non-custodial parent, change. That parent is not present for the day-to-day events that happen in life.  The child does not experience that parent’s life on a regular basis. And as time goes by, they relate to each other differently.  They may still love each other and care for each other just as much, but they simply lose the day-to-day connection that occurs when you live under the same roof. Their lives become truly separated from each other. Unfortunately, when a divorce happens, this change cannot be avoided. It’s simply a by-product of a divorce. The closeness of the parent and child can be kept intact with frequent visits and time spent together. But that is not the same relationship as when that parent lived in the same home as the child.

    1. What can i say, Tina has seen the light and is finally going to try to talk with Bette about her decision to leave and then the divorce. She should have done that three years ago when she asked for time to figure herself out. The only positive i can say that she filled for divorce before getting in a relationship with Carrie.

So Carrie is nine years younger than Tina. Did Tina fall for the midlife crisis that she just throwed away her life with Bette, her supposed love of her life, just because Carrie, a much younger woman gave her attention when she was supposed to search herself and in the progress damaged her relationship with Angie because she without a real thought throwed away and moved away from her family?

And Carrie, damn, how could you think and say out loud that Bette should have done more and prepared Angie and that when Angie would see how happy they both are that Angie would be oh so happy for them while she feels Tina left her and Bette behind without any explanation and in Angie her eyes is starting a new family.
Both Tina and Carrie spoke after that with good insights but still, i really dislike how Tina handled everything in the past three years.

Best decision of Tina is to postpone the wedding. I don’t know if Bette is that open to a conservation with Tina, they need to talk but in my opinion on Bette’s timeline.

    2. I can see that you are really involved in this story. This may not go exactly as you suggest. Let’s just say that the story will proceed in what I hope you will find to be a satisfactory manner and result. This particular scenario is a hard nut to crack and to make into a reasonable satisfying ending. But that is what Gen Q gave us – a totally unreasonable and unexplained breakup and then a fairy tale ending. And to top it off, they gave very little connection from the breakup to the reunion marriage. No continuity and no logic. And that is the purpose of this story is to suggest some path and method to get from breakup to happily ever after. Hang with me Bibi…. together we will get there. Or at least an honest attempt to get there.

      Thanks for your comment.

      • Hey Martha,

Already posted my comment on chapter 4 before i read your reply to me.

GenQ was a disaster, no plotlines and left us bewildered. I’m glad you try to make sense of their breakup and their rekindled relationship and ultimately their second marriage.

I don’t care if you write it different than i expect, you are the writer and I’m in for this journey.

    3. How can Tina possibly fall in love with anyone better than Bette…is Tina’s head so messed up she can’t see what’s right in front of her?? She was attracted to her in NY? That doesn’t seem to be the actions of someone trying to find herself.
Her moral background and conscious, lacked a bit, as she was ready to start looking again !
Good for Angie, laying it on the line as well, almost making it tough for Tina to thinking everything with her and Bette has been OK for the last 3 years !! Did she not really know Bette at all !
And what kind of mother only sees her daughter on high days and holidays? ☹️

‘She then called Bette and told her that she had met someone, and Bette would be receiving divorce papers within days. This was about a year after the separation.  Bette was devasted’.
      – This is an awful way to be told your being divorced, no wonder Bette was devastated, she didn’t know why she had no chance of fighting to save her marriage!
I can see how Tina wants to make it right with Angie and so she should be …. but it seems she is calling of the marriage to Carrie, very easily…almost to easily… did she really love her at all, I’m wondering?
Really getting into this, loving it

    4. Janice,

Sometimes people simply do not think things through. They just respond in the moment. I think Tina was lonely. Carrie was young, attractive and showed Tina some attention. As you will see Carrie was convenient and she fit Tina’s lifestyle at the moment. Tina is totally consumed by her job and Carrie is only available part time. So read on and let’s see what happens.
