Chapter 5
They finish their meal and make their way to a nearby bar for a drink. They sit alongside each other on a couch, close together and leaning towards one another.
(Bette) Have you been here before?
(Tina nods) Yes, just the once. Helena brought me
Bette nods and they both glance around.
(Tina) It’s a bit more upmarket than where we had dinner
Bette laughs.
(Bette) A bit, yes
Their drinks arrive and are placed on the small table in front of the couch and they both thank the staff member and pick up their glasses. They lean back into the couch again and Tina has a sip of her drink. Bette watches her for a moment before speaking.
(Bette) There’s something I wouldn’t mind talking to you about
Tina looks over at her, taking a moment to examine her before responding.
(Tina) OK
Bette has a sip of her drink and Tina watches her.
(Tina) Is everything OK?
Bette looks back at her and smiles.
(Bette) Yes, everything’s fine. I just wondered if we could have a conversation about what we’re doing
Tina raises her eyebrows and takes a breath and Bette gives her a reassuring smile, waving her hand dismissively as she leans forward and places her glass back on the table.
(Bette) It’s not one of those conversations, don’t worry
Bette leans back again and they smile at each other.
(Bette) I know we spoke about things early on, but I thought it might be a good idea to touch base again
Tina furrows her brow and nods.
(Tina) Of course. What is it you want to talk about?
(Bette) Well, we’ve been seeing each other a lot. Spending a lot of time together, going out, doing different things. It’s more than I usually would in this sort of situation, and I want to check in with you. Make sure I’m clear on where the boundaries are
Tina looks at her for a long moment, trying to read her.
(Tina) Has this been confusing? Do you want to see one another less?
Bette smiles and shakes her head.
(Bette) No, that’s not what I’m saying
Tina frowns as she waits for Bette to continue, and Bette smiles at her. When Bette doesn’t say anything further Tina eventually smiles and looks at her with her head leaned to one side.

I love your writing very much!
I believe that Tina is not being honest with herself. She and Bette are seeing more and more of each other and have now agreed to allow the other to express affection in public. I don’t think either one of them will be able to keep this charade up for very much longer without admitting that they both mean a lot to each other. Most women cannot keep up a continuous sexual engagements with someone without developing feelings. And the fact that they are spending time together having meals and enjoying each others company to the exclusion of others only increases the the likelihood of developing feelings of attachment. Of course one could always deny those feelings exist. But at some point, there will be a request which will cause one or the other to have to choose whether to admit they are attached or let the other go on about their lives and not see them again. So whatever this is, it is a relationship of sorts. But with everything, with each new encounter with each other and with the more time that is being spent with each other and not someone else, the more things will change form one of an arrangement to one of an attachment. And if one or the other decides that perhaps the arrangement should end and not go forward, then one or both of their hearts will be broken. The time is coming soon when they are going to have to choose. Admit to having real feelings and have a relationship which has a future or break off this arrangement so they can minimize the heart break.
Fascinating story. What total control these two women are exhibiting on the outside. But on the inside, I bet they are a pile of mush. Thanks for the chapter… I want to read more…
Casual relationship doesn’t seem so casual I love this story. It’s exquisite pain reading them clearly falling in love and trying to fight their feelings.
