Chapter 5
She breathed out long and slow, leaned back and stared at the putter she’d propped against the wall beside her desk, then at the clock on the wall above it. It was a Qlocktwo. A large black square with written-out numbers that illuminated to write out the time. ‘It is quarter past ten’, it said.
Pippa would be sleeping. Probably worked half the night.
‘Jesus Christ,’ she said softly. And yet it was hard to not miss her. All those drives to and from the canyon, those beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Ray, the cat. To not imagine what might have been if . . .
She closed her eyes as the tears threatened.
If I didn’t love Tina.
She went back, in her mind, to the night of Joyce’s birthday. The last time she’d touched her. That dance they’d shared. Tina’s soft hand against her palm, the scent of her hair, the downward curve of her eyelashes. Bette had stood there knowing that the thing with Pippa was finished, it had to be, but she hadn’t told Tina that night, and not a day had gone by since then that she didn’t regret it.
She pressed her palms together and laid her lips against them, wondering, ever wondering, what Tina might have said.
What if that moment, that dance, that song, what if that was the only moment that might have brought her back to me?
She swallowed. Clenched her jaw and then put her hand in the pocket of her jacket and took out a Post-It that Isaac Zakarian had just given her. Reading it again, and knowing that she had to fly out of LA that night, she felt a parental Bat signal to Tina was warranted. So she picked up her phone.
***
The bar at Dana’s was busier than usual. Tess had only been back in LA a matter of weeks, but already the change in both the bar and its owner was marked and very welcome.
‘You cutting class?’ Tess asked when she saw Bette walk up to the bar.
Bette smiled. ‘Is Tina here?’
‘Nope.’
‘Oh. Shane?’
Tess pointed to a table in the corner by the window, where Shane was sitting frowning at a laptop. ‘Coffee?’
‘No, but I’ll take a glass of water?’

Damn! Tina can still melt Bette’s bones!
oh yes she can….. :-)
thanks for reading and commenting, my friend

Okay, it means lots of money to accept this offer…. but will it make Bette happy? I think not. Professionally maybe so but personally, she is going to be miserable … traveling, working 60 to 80 hours per week and being on the other side of the world from Tina. Time for Bette to decide what in her life is the most important – her professional life or her relationships….. Time to put her efforts into winning Tina back and getting on that road to true happiness.
Thanks for the chapter…
Great comment Martha & totally agree.
it’s a great comment, Collins, I agree :-)
haha Martha, are you psychic? Or do you just know Bette Porter really well??
thanks for reading and commenting! It is much appreciated and I hope you enjoy where this story takes our girls
L
Omg…please continue it…brilliant.
Those feelings are soo real. I wanna read more!

Wow, what an awesome read! Can’t wait to see where this twist takes our girls.
Hi Finn422! *waves* Great to see you here and reading my story. :-) I’m so pleased you’re enjoying it. The next little bit is a bit of a rough ride but don’t worry – just enjoy it and all will be well….
thanks again

I love this no-nonsense Tina and won’t take Bette’s crap anymore! Yet, she’s super tender and always there to support Bette.
And Bette needs to get off the sidelines, tell Pippa it’s over and done and get out of that nowhere, extended sleepover! Pick a lane Porter, the only one you really want- the road back to Tina!
PPS – loving this story!
Hi Kira! How are you? Great to see you here :-) Thank you so much for reading this story and for commenting.
I love ‘pick a lane, Porter’ – that’s a lot of her problem in GQ, isn’t it? Here, she’s just really really scared. She knows she wants Tina but she just…. can’t….. get there
I love writing Tina in this tender way. She’s so lovely.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the rest of the ride! Thanks again for reading my writing

Hi my Scottish friend,
What, what will Bette do??? She’s making progress though with asking to talk to Tina & then actually doing it & on top of that agreeing to the dinner to discuss with Angie!!
And Tina not allowing Bette to hide behind her moods or fears & avoid telling the whole truth.
And I agree with Martha that Bette will be miserable if she accepts the offer – she won’t like being away from Tina or Angie. Quite the dilemma.
And I certainly agree with Kira that Bette needs to get herself out of the ineffective situation with P. Get her gone & sooner than later – like the next chapter!!! And no, they don’t need to be friends – work colleagues if you insist!!
Great chapter, lots of feelings, what ifs & an uncertain future.
Thanks for the gift of your talent!!!
Hello my Texas buddy!
Thank you so much for keeping up with my story. I really appreciate it. :-)
Your deep, devoted antipathy towards Carrie and Pippa makes me laugh. I promise they are exiting the stage as of now (well, there might be the odd namecheck – sorry!)
This tale is going to get worse before it gets better, I’m afraid, but I hope you will stick around for it.
Hope you’re well!

Am loving this, especially the comical bits! You really do have a way with words.
I’m wondering now if after the meal together and with Angie, she won’t do it, especially if Tina spills her feelings….
Don’t keep us waiting to long …..

Thanks again for your time. Next chapter is a bit rough but rest assured they’re headed somewhere gooooooood….
take care!

Gawd this chapter was just so Tina being so gentle with Bette at the end but also tough-love when needed.
Hi! Thank you for reading this story and commenting – I’m glad you liked how Tina is with Bette. I enjoy writing them as complex people, lol
