Chapter X – Empire State of Mind – Europe, part 1

    Bette laughed along with her.

“I may have helped work a miracle once, Jenna. And I know it cost something. I knew I broke your heart when I forced you towards a power-money angle,” Bette said, more soberly now. “But I can’t do the reverse. Only you can do that.”

    They fell silent.

“You and I: we could have been perfect, you know,” Jenna said wistfully.

“You always had such a good eye for art people would collect…and I’ve learned how to turn that instinct into something people would salivate and lust over, and pay top dollar for…”

“You’ll find someone else, Jenna,” Bette responded softly, cutting in.

“For better or for worse I am who I am right now because of you, Bette Porter,” Jenna answered, knocking back the rest of her drink. “Find me someone else who can do that.”

She added, with a small smile, “Besides, mum thought you were rather dishy. And smart. And would be great for me. She was always a sucker for beauty. And brains.”

Bette smiled, “Well your mum was truly one of a kind. A character. I remember her saying, every time I planned to take a walk, or when you and I were stepping out to go some place, “Bank on rain – tis one of the joys of the English summer. Best you bring an umbrella with you!”

She added, “I was glad to have known her. I learned a lot from her, and she came along in my life at just the right moment, too.”

Jenna suddenly sat up, slapping her head lightly, “I almost forgot … since I lost track of you once you left London. Tried to find you at the address you left. The one in Hong Kong, where you said you were heading to, next?”

Bette nodded, then angled her head in a query.

“I wanted to find you because mum left you her Bridget Riley.”

    “What?!” Bette asked, exclaiming.

Jenna nodded, “a beautiful one, from the series she painted in the late 60s. I’ve hung it in the Kensington apartments, which mum left to me. But I’ll be happy to have the painting crated and sent to you.”

Bette’s mouth was still hanging open.

Jenna smiled, “Yeah … I guess she remembered, towards the end, all of the interesting discussions the three of us had, well into the night, debating mid-century art. And she must have thought about the amazing mid-century art collection you said your French friend who moved to Acapulco, owned, and how excited you were about that collection. In fact I remarked to her once that that Bridget Riley seemed to capture what you’d been saying …”

    1. I really love this story, even though I rarely write a comment.
but I don’t understand Bette go to wherever, why a woman need to fly like a bird of prey? Bette is a very beautiful woman, but it’s like the women who encounter with her, there is no self-control.
I always love Bette and Tina’s deep love for each other in this story. but the trouble was that Bette never drew the line against others.
and Diane was perhaps a little too protective now, compared to a friend’s role.
I hope Tina will not be angry if Bette tells her the “meeting”.
the telephone conversation was sweet between them.
wondered what Tina had to say to her? :)
      thanks!

    2. Nice chapter. Sweet FaceTime scene. Bette was taken off guard – kind of surprising. Hope Jenna doesn’t cause issues. Thanks for the update!

    3. Great update! Bette has to be careful right now with an emotionally hormonal Tina. She has to know that she can’t just roam and conquer. I like the sidekick role of Diane. She will kept Bette accountable. Damn that woman has would be lovers everywhere. Keep posting, please.

    4. Thanks for the post. Bette needs a full time body guard just to keep her admirers away! You would think she would have learned to have set boundaries with her admirers since Tina got upset with her “incidents” in the past.

    5. There are things happening in the world that beggar the imagination, I know. But a planeload of people blown out of the sky? Just another level of insanity — all those lives lost. One minute here. The next….

May not be the right forum, but I just can’t shake the feeling, “there but for the grace of God …” for one who takes to the skies.

Very sorry: just a pause for now.

In the meantime — hugs. And, I wish you https://soundcloud.com/pmrrecords/sam-smith-nirvana-2 with someone.

      Back soon.

    6. Hi Skydancer,
I loved the chapter, especially when I read that Toms sperm was used to fertilize bettes eggs, that is what I was hoping for all along. That is going to be one beautiful baby.
