Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
“His will sets that out specifically?” Bette repeated, sitting up, and taking a piece of paper Jackson extended to her.
Jackson gave her time to read through that part of Peter’s will, which he’d been charged to execute.
“What’s so special about this set of liens and rights?” Bette asked as she handed the paper back to Jackson.
Jackson handed her another set of papers. “Peter’s grandfather had arranged for them a long time ago. And he’d negotiated an extraordinarily long period for them, too. By now, these are still good for the next hundred years.”
Bette studied the copies of the liens and rights that Jackson was talking about.
“And these can’t be sold the way the others can be?” Bette asked, wanting to be sure she understood.
Jackson shook his head.
“Do you know anything else about this set, Jackson? Why it seems to have been so important to Peter?” she asked.
“I know that Peter’s grandfather, and later on, his father, fought a bitter court battle over them. Peter wouldn’t talk about it, but the research my firm has done shows it was important for the Hegel family that those liens and mining rights stay in the family.”
Bette rubbed her eyebrows unconsciously, studying the various papers Jackson had shown her more closely.
“And Bette,” Jackson coughed before continuing, “the court battle was with Andrew Green.”
“Andrew Green! Is that why his assistant mentioned those liens as something that remained important to him the whole time she’d worked for him?”
Jackson nodded. “She didn’t know, and to this point it hasn’t come out in the investigation – but I should let you know that our research shows that Andrew Green’s father and Peter’s grandfather had been partners in the gold business for a while. And Andrew Green had claimed that he had a right to those Mali liens and mining rights, even if they’d been arranged by Peter’s grandfather and had only been made out to him and his heirs.”
Bette sat back against the sofa, and exclaimed, “Hah! So Andrew Green and Peter’s family had that kind of history, huh? Could that have fed into later animosity that Andrew Green may have harbored towards Peter?”
Jackson shrugged. “Peter never talked to me about it, if there’d been something like that. The gold business has always been funny that way, Bette. Fractious relationships and strange partnerships. Peter wanted to get away from all of that.”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
