Chapters 8-12 – Conclusion
”Counsellors, how lovely to have you in my court together again,” Judge Robinson stated from the bench. ”To what do I owe the pleasure.”
”Your Honour, I would like to request a continuance,” Bette said. ”My client’s primary counsel was admitted for a minor surgery yesterday and won’t be able to return until the end of the week at the earliest.”
”I have no objection to this request,” Tina interjected.
”The trial is underway,” Judge Robinson replied. ”Can’t you consult with the original attorney, get up to speed and take over from here Ms. Porter?”
Tina and Bette glanced at each other across the room. They didn’t really have any choice.
”A moment in chambers, your Honour?” Bette said.
”Fine,” Judge Robinson sighed. ”Court is in 15 minute recess. And this better be good.”
”This is not a complicated case,” the Judge said as she entered her office, closely followed by Bette and Tina. ”You’re bright and capable lawyers; step up and let’s make this thing go away.”
”It’s not that simple, Your Honour,” Tina replied.
”You’ve been in court on this matter, Tina,” the Judge said. ”What’s complicated about it? I would think this change would be to your advantage; I don’t know why you’re supporting the motion for a continuance.”
”We don’t…that is to say, neither of us wants this to turn into more than it needs to be,” Tina began.
”Spit it out counsellor,” the Judge rolled her eyes.
”Tina and I are romantically involved,” Bette said. ”And pending the outcome of the case, we wouldn’t want there to be even the appearance of impropriety.”
”Well.” the Judge glanced back and forth between them. ”Imagine my shock at this little revelation.”
”No one’s more shocked than we are, our Honour,” Tina said sincerely.
”I was being sarcastic,” the Judge replied.
Tina was taken aback at the Judge’s forthright statement. A relationship with Bette was certainly not something she had anticipated before it just kind of…happened.
”Your client is presently out on bail?” Judge Robinson asked Bette.
”He is our Honour.”
”Fine,” she flipped open her calendar. ”One week from today. And I won’t take kindly to another request for continuance. Get your houses in order.”
”Yes, Your Honour,” Bette and Tina spoke together, relieved at her decision.
