Comfort Enough
Bette came through the front door, shedding her purse, briefcase, and suit jacket on her way to the dining room. Or, more specifically, on her way to the bottle of Merlot that she’d been thinking about for the past hour. She had just completed a colossally exhausting week that included courting two major gift prospects and hosting a site visit with a foundation funder. In between all of that, she had written her director’s letter and summary for the annual report and reviewed portfolios for a photography exhibit that the CAC was co-sponsoring. But now, she thought, reaching for the bottle from the rack, it was Friday. And for the next two days, she was not going to think about work.
“Hey T,” Bette called, uncorking her wine. “Where are you?”
“I’m getting ready,” Tina’s disembodied voice replied.
“For what?”
“I’ve got that children’s charity thing tonight,” Tina said.
Bette poured herself a glass of wine. Great. She was going to be sitting home alone while Tina tripped the light fantastic with Helena ***** Peabody at one of the year’s hottest and most exclusive black tie galas.
“What did you expect? You asked her to be your roommate. You can’t get angry when you get what you ask for,” Bette reasoned, taking a sip.
But what she’d asked for hadn’t been what she’d wanted. True, she’d been ecstatic to be back in regular contact with Tina, to have the opportunity to see her every day and share her life in some abbreviated way. They’d had important conversations once the initial awkwardness of the close quarters wore off, and the two of them had even started making dinner together a few nights a week.
Yet, the ecstasy was balanced in almost equal measure with the most painful heartache that Bette had ever known. She was this close to the woman she loved so much and needed so desperately, but she couldn’t get any closer. An emotional barrier separated them that was as apparent to Bette as if it had been made of concrete and razor wire. And she had no idea how to cross it. There would be times when Tina looked at her with such love and longing that Bette found it impossible to believe that Tina wasn’t feeling the same deep, aching pull that she was. But then something would happen. They’d be interrupted or Tina would get spooked, and they’d go back to being roommates again.

A beautifully constructed chapter. Bette’s flashback putting on the necklace was particularly touching. I can feel the longing between them and the hesitancy – it’s a pure pleasure to read.
What a tender moment. They still have quite a way to go don’t they?
Kepp writing it – I’ll keep reading it.
Gah, the sweet, sweet torture! Oh this is amazingly but achingly heartbreaking in the same instance. Lovely!
FCC…oh, the heartache. IC and co. should take lessons from you and several of the other writers that share their talents with us. Your writing is an amazing gift. Pls, carry on.
Oh, the bittersweet taste of love. One step forward, two steps back. Patience is a virtue and Bette is doing her level best to not push Tina too much. Tina is just guarding her heart. Time and circumstance will hopefully get them both going in the same direction. Nice chapter as usual.
This was one of those fine, top notch chapters, FFC. Your writing is truly visual and lovely.
FFC….you so write from the heart. I sincerely hope that life has never thrown you a curve because, the way you write is as if you lived it. Thank you for a beautiful chapter. It gives me hope that Tina cut out early to rush home to Bette. All is not lost!
this is getting better and better as you go FFC..I hope you keep up the good writing…
My favorite part was when Tina was able to look Bette in the eye and said “Not always”. I think Bette needs to get kicked around a little more.
You are killing me and I know the outcome of the story. How crazy is that?
You have really set up a tough situation. I don’t know how Bette can deal with watching Tina go out with Hell-No. And putting on her necklace…I think that would completely do me in. You bring them so close but…..ah the torture!!!!
More please!
my heart is aching…really.
loving the intensity of this story…
It’s incredibly intense
very visual writing. nice.
What Mango said plus sniff, sniff.
T, you have to give her another chance. who else will love you like Bette. this is a great story. I discovered it a few chapters ago and fell for it. You have a way with descriptions. i see everything you write. please post soon, and I hope there is a happy ending on the horizon!!
Beautiful as always FFC…

snQQpy – what did me in was, One, chance. If you give me that, i promise, I’ll never need to ask for another.
ffc – oh my god, what you do to me and my heart. that was so elequently written and so heart felt i cant even take it. im gonna be bouncing all day from that. thanks girl.
FFC, your writing always sets the visual stage for me, and at this moment…..
“I don’t know, Bette. I just don’t know,” Tina said, wiping away fresh tears as she got up from the couch and walked out of the room.
…..I visualized snatching Tina by the back of her hair and dragging her ass back to that couch!! -_-
Post again soon…
Why must you make me all teary before class??? That was a lil heartbreaking, but very understandable. Keep giving them time, hope for another chance. A love like Bette and Tina’s cant be deniede for too long.
“Exquisite as a diamond, your writing is.” Yoda
Wow. Bit by bit ladies, it all takes time. Your doing such a fantastic job of moving this along nice and easy, but at the same time leaving us with that anticipation of what next. Will we go beyond dinner, will Tina gradually pull away from Helena, thats what keeps us coming back. Hopefully Bette lets it rest for tonight, and realizes tomorrow is another day. Baby steps, cos she messed up big time. They’ll get there, right?
Reading that chapter made my heart break.Great writing FF.I can’t wait to see the outcome.
Yes you do know womam.. that you love Bette the same way she loves you..then why fight against love like this?? please let Tina give Bette another change… another chance for their love..FFC your killing me..lol.FIX this please :o)
