Comfort Enough
“Yep. All done. And so is this,” Bette said, fastening the clasp and standing back.
“Thank you,” Tina said, turning to face her.
“You really do look gorgeous, Tina,” Bette said softly, putting her hands on Tina’s shoulders. “Of course, I am partial to blondes.”
“Not always,” Tina said, looking directly into Bette’s eyes.
“Oh yes,” Bette said, not breaking eye contact. “Always.”
~~~~
Bette fell asleep in front of the TV and didn’t wake up until she felt Tina sit down next to her on the couch.
“Bette. Hey, let’s get you to bed.”
“Time’s it?” Bette mumbled, rubbing her eyes.
“About 10,” Tina said softly.
“You’re home early.”
“You know how those things are. Lots of posing and posturing. Very boring. I left Helena to deal with her silent auction stash and took a cab.”
“I would have picked you up,” Bette said, propping herself up on her elbow.
“Thanks,” Tina smiled, brushing back an unruly lock of hair from Bette’s face.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“Where did you get that necklace?” Bette reached up to finger the chain where it rested against Tina’s throat.
“It’s Dana’s. She helped me pick out the dress and said that she had the perfect necklace to go with it.”
Bette nodded, not moving her hand.
“Why do you ask?”
“I thought it was from Helena.”
“No. It’swe’renot like that,” Tina said.
They were both silent for a few moments before Tina spoke again.
“While we’re talking about jewelry, can I ask you a question?”
“Yes.”
“Why are you still wearing this?” Tina picked up Bette’s left hand and ran her fingers over the gold band.
“I’m not ready to take it off,” Bette whispered.
“Why?”
“Because I’m not ready to let go.” Bette squeezed Tina’s hand, and Tina nodded wordlessly, closing her eyes.
“Are you?” Bette asked. “Are you really ready to let go?”
When Tina opened her eyes, two tears rolled down her cheeks. Bette sat up and took Tina’s face in her hands, kissing the tears away.
“Why are you doing this?” Tina asked, her voice barely audible.
“Because I love you. Because I’ve always loved you. But I forgot to keep showing you how much.”
“What do you want from me?”
“One chance. If you give me that, I promise I’ll never need to ask for another,” Bette said, resting her forehead against Tina’s.
Tina didn’t move for several minutes, and Bette tried to stay as still as possible, as if her lack of motion could keep time itself from moving forward. Finally, Tina leaned back and took a ragged breath.
“I’m not sure I have another chance left. Even if I wanted to give you one.”
“But do you want to? That’s all you need to know. The rest we can figure out together.” Bette took Tina’s hand in both of hers, brought it to her lips, and kissed it tenderly.
“I don’t know, Bette. I just don’t know,” Tina said, wiping away fresh tears as she got up from the couch and walked out of the room.
A beautifully constructed chapter. Bette’s flashback putting on the necklace was particularly touching. I can feel the longing between them and the hesitancy – it’s a pure pleasure to read.
What a tender moment. They still have quite a way to go don’t they?
Kepp writing it – I’ll keep reading it.
Gah, the sweet, sweet torture! Oh this is amazingly but achingly heartbreaking in the same instance. Lovely!
FCC…oh, the heartache. IC and co. should take lessons from you and several of the other writers that share their talents with us. Your writing is an amazing gift. Pls, carry on.
Oh, the bittersweet taste of love. One step forward, two steps back. Patience is a virtue and Bette is doing her level best to not push Tina too much. Tina is just guarding her heart. Time and circumstance will hopefully get them both going in the same direction. Nice chapter as usual.
This was one of those fine, top notch chapters, FFC. Your writing is truly visual and lovely.
FFC….you so write from the heart. I sincerely hope that life has never thrown you a curve because, the way you write is as if you lived it. Thank you for a beautiful chapter. It gives me hope that Tina cut out early to rush home to Bette. All is not lost!
this is getting better and better as you go FFC..I hope you keep up the good writing…
My favorite part was when Tina was able to look Bette in the eye and said “Not always”. I think Bette needs to get kicked around a little more.
You are killing me and I know the outcome of the story. How crazy is that?
You have really set up a tough situation. I don’t know how Bette can deal with watching Tina go out with Hell-No. And putting on her necklace…I think that would completely do me in. You bring them so close but…..ah the torture!!!!
More please!
my heart is aching…really.
loving the intensity of this story…
It’s incredibly intense
very visual writing. nice.
What Mango said plus sniff, sniff.
T, you have to give her another chance. who else will love you like Bette. this is a great story. I discovered it a few chapters ago and fell for it. You have a way with descriptions. i see everything you write. please post soon, and I hope there is a happy ending on the horizon!!
snQQpy – what did me in was, One, chance. If you give me that, i promise, I’ll never need to ask for another.
ffc – oh my god, what you do to me and my heart. that was so elequently written and so heart felt i cant even take it. im gonna be bouncing all day from that. thanks girl.
FFC, your writing always sets the visual stage for me, and at this moment…..
“I don’t know, Bette. I just don’t know,” Tina said, wiping away fresh tears as she got up from the couch and walked out of the room.
…..I visualized snatching Tina by the back of her hair and dragging her ass back to that couch!! -_-
Post again soon…
Why must you make me all teary before class??? That was a lil heartbreaking, but very understandable. Keep giving them time, hope for another chance. A love like Bette and Tina’s cant be deniede for too long.
“Exquisite as a diamond, your writing is.” Yoda
Wow. Bit by bit ladies, it all takes time. Your doing such a fantastic job of moving this along nice and easy, but at the same time leaving us with that anticipation of what next. Will we go beyond dinner, will Tina gradually pull away from Helena, thats what keeps us coming back. Hopefully Bette lets it rest for tonight, and realizes tomorrow is another day. Baby steps, cos she messed up big time. They’ll get there, right?
Reading that chapter made my heart break.Great writing FF.I can’t wait to see the outcome.
Yes you do know womam.. that you love Bette the same way she loves you..then why fight against love like this?? please let Tina give Bette another change… another chance for their love..FFC your killing me..lol.FIX this please :o)
