    Comfort Enough

Bette turned the cell phone over and over in her hands.

“Is that not working? Because I have mine,” Alice said, reaching for her bag.

    “It’s working,” Bette sighed.

    “Okay great. Then call her.”

    “It’s not that simple.”

“Sure it is. I’ll show you,” Alice said, reaching for the phone.

    “That’s not what I meant.”

“You know, I realize that you think you have all the time in the world to work this out with Tina. But let me tell you something. You don’t.”

Bette looked up, meeting Alice’s eyes.  “What do you mean?”

“Did you get here late? Let me recap the highlights. She’s moving on. She’s trying to get over you. Her heart’s not in it, but she’s dating. Another woman. Who is rich, gorgeous, and has an accent.  And the longer you keep ***** around–and I mean that in every possible sense of the words–the less likely you are to get her back.”

Bette crossed her arms defensively. “Who says I want to get her back?”

Alice shook her head. “Okay. Is that just for dramatic effect, or am I supposed to believe that you aren’t still completely wrecked about this?”

    Bette shrugged and looked away.

“Great. There’s a mature response,” Alice said.

“Do you…do you think she’ll talk to me?” Bette asked hesitantly.

“You have a better chance of finding out if you actually call her.” Alice was gathering her things, trying to flag down the waitress for the check.

    “I don’t know if I’m ready.”

“Well, you’d better get ready. Because every day that passes is one more day that she feels like you’ve given up.”

“She believes that?” Bette was incredulous.

    “Jesus, wouldn’t you?”

“It’s not like she’s calling. It’s not like she’s reaching out. She’s the one who walked out on me, remember? She’s the one who gave up.”

Alice leaned in, the look in her eyes pure fire. “Is that what this is about? Waiting to see who comes crawling back first? One of you has to suck it up. And given the circumstances, you’d better start puckering. Don’t let your stubbornness get in the way, Bette. You can be self-righteous all alone or you can be happy with Tina.”

    1. Love (and fic) is much better the second time around…

Can you believe I about had this memorized? I loved it that much! Your writing is so fresh, so clear, so distinctive! And the beauty part of this story is that the chapters are longer than your usual too!

      Thanks for reprising this one!

    2. Thank you!
I’m finally able to love Alice again =P
Cause you know, that girl’s been up to a lot of crap on other stories these days…

And doesn’t Bette know that the person who walks out is usually the one who’s just begging to be found again?

      Gotta go!!!!!!!!!!
