    Comfort Enough

Bette thought about Alice’s admonitions long after she left the restaurant and returned to work. Alice made it seem so simple-pick up the phone and give Tina a call. Never mind that the most positive interactions they’d had to date were the two meetings overseen by Tina’s shark attorney to discuss their assets and how to divide them. Without the benefit of a $250 an hour chaperone, she and Tina seemed incapable of sharing even routine pleasantries, let alone any kind of meaningful dialogue.

As she sat at her desk, Bette wondered how it could have gotten so out of hand so fast. Of course, in reality, it hadn’t been fast-it had been insidiously slow. They had lost ground a little at a time over several months, an inch here and there, barely noticeable, until one day

“Bette,” James said, interrupting her thoughts.

    “Yes,” she said, looking up.

“I’m heading out. If that’s okay,” he said.

Bette looked at her watch and sighed. 7:45.

“Great. I’ll see you in the morning.”

He nodded and lingered for a moment as if to say something more, but decided against it and left.

Bette leaned back in her chair, stretching her arms above her head. She noticed the glint of the gold ring, still on her left hand. She couldn’t bring herself to take it off, though she had tried more than once. What did it even mean any more? What power did it have? It certainly hadn’t restricted her “social life” since the separation. How many women had there been? All of them hers for the taking, offering themselves up to her like so many beautiful flowers, whether or not she had anything to offer in return.

Candace had opened up some kind of Pandora’s Box. And if everyone already assumed she was a carousing cheater, incapable of committing herself to Tina, then why shouldn’t she at least enjoy the pleasures along with the judgments?

But she wasn’t feeling any pleasure. That was the thing. Yes, the women were lovely and beguiling and *****. But though she took them and used them, she didn’t want them. She didn’t want anyone except the one she had always wanted. The one she had never stopped wanting. Bette twisted the ring on her finger wondering if it was the same way with Tina and Helena. Could Tina really have feelings for someone else? Or was Helena merely a placeholder in her life? Alice said they were dating, which actually felt a little more dangerous to Bette than if she’d been told they were ***** each other with mad abandon.
